Illinios Civil Unions Goes to House Floor

Timothy Kincaid

March 5th, 2009

Despite the efforts of Elise and her Mormon e-mail distribution, HB2234, the Illinios civil unions bill, has passed out of committee.

The House Youth and Family Committee approved the bill 5-4. It now goes to the House floor.

Though it is wonderful news that the civil unions bill has made it out of committee, it is yet uncertain if the bill will come before the general assembly (the Illinois name for our house of representatives) for a vote this year. An almost identical bill made it out of committee last year, but it never came before the Illinois general assembly .

Greg Harris, the openly gay member of the general assembly who has faithfully sponsored the bill for several years in a row, is quite shrewd with his plans for the bill. Harris has deferred bringing the bill up on the floor of the general assembly until he feels confident there are enough votes to pass it. Last year, there was enough support in the state senate to pass the civil unions bill, but we were about 8 votes short in the general assembly. So, even though the bill made it out of committee, it was never debated on or voted on in the general assembly.

Let’s hope this year is different! My own congressional district changed parties from republican to democrat this year. I have met our new congresswoman, and I will certainly be phoning her office to ask her for her support of the bill.

Thanks for keeping everyone up to date on what’s happening in our state.
