Washington Gets All-But-The-Name

Timothy Kincaid

April 15th, 2009

In 2007, the State of Washington enacted a Domestic Partnership registry. It was beefed up in 2008, and now legislation has passed to give it all the same rights and responsibilities as marriage:

The bill, which adds hundreds of rights and responsibilities to current law, passed the house on a 62-35 vote. The vote follows a 30-18 in the state Senate several weeks ago. The bill now heads to Governor Christine Gregoire’s desk for a signature.

Congratulations Washingtonians

I will believe it is all but the name (which to be frank, is actually acceptable to me, but I don’t count) when it confers the rights of kinship.

Reading it, I suspect it will fail on the same grounds as every other “alternative”, and so cannot extend congratulations.

As politics, it’s smart and strategically excellent. It keeps the antis focussed on California, Iowa, and the Northeast.

Good news in New York, btw. The state Senator who is taking up the SSM legalization bill thinks he has sufficient votes together to get passage.

In New Jersey the grapevine is that the governor and legislature will pass it during the lame duck session after their elections there, like they did their death penalty repeal in their lame duck session last time (December 2007 iirc).

Lastly, MassEquality’s Marc Solomon has now gone to work for CalEquality. If anyone can organize a successful referendum that repeals Prop. 8, it’s him.

And Focus on the Family are trying to get it repealed, of course:
