Southern Comforts

Researchers at Kansas State University mapped the famous “Seven Deadly Sins” (lust, gluttony, greed, sloth, wrath, envy and pride) using various statistics to represent each of the sins. Lust was calculated by compiling the number of sexually transmitted diseases (HIV, AIDS, syphilis, chlamydia and gonorrhea) reported per capita. This is what that looks like:

Is it any wonder some of our best literary figures come from the deep South?

Oh my God guys! did you notice that Florida is a hot spot for Pride, Wrath, Envy & Greed?

I wonder if that is what is keeping all those retirees living longer. And here I thought that with the birth of Viagra they would get another one too…

I suppose we might say the human condition is lived out more fully here in the South than elsewhere. Thus we have the need for grace, which might have been estimated by your researchers had they counted the number of people attending church. Even under the hostile circumstances we sometimes encounter, especially in the South, GLBTQ people still seek the spiritual connection that communal life in a church offers. We yearn for the day when the churches that exclude their GLBTQ children finally repent of their inhospitality [which is the sin of Sodom, by the way] and embrace us all as beloved humans. Then, as our brother and fellow Southerner Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., said of oppressors in his own time, our victory will be double: we will be restored in our relationships, and the oppressors will be healed and won as friends. All over the country we are seeing more churches truly open their minds, hearts, and doors to GLBTQ people; although the struggle is not yet over, light is breaking in, and we know how the story ends.

Just remember:
Religion is the root (route?) of all evil!

When some friends from New Hampshire visited us in SW Virginia a while back, they remarked on the number of churches in our area (there are 35 in a 3 mile radius of our house) saying, “There sure must be a lot of sinners down here”. [grin]

Ummm, JimInMa

That may well be your opinion, but the actual quote is:

But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.

Looking at our current economic condition and the number of financial scandals which have rocked our nation recently, I think that both the religious and the non-religious can agree that an undue love of excessive wealth is indeed at the root of much evil.

But that would be a discussion about greed, and we are discussing lust.

I find it interesting that when it comes to sexually transmitted diseases (per capita), San Francisco, Manhattan, Los Angeles, Miami Beach, Atlanta and Seattle don’t even make a blip.

So if gay folk “are also 23 times more likely to get other sexually transmitted diseases than a heterosexual” as Carrie Prejean and her pastor Mile McPherson believe, then I guess they’re getting them in Houston.

It’s not surprising, considering that the red area on the map is also more likely to promote abstinence-only “education” over condom use.

That’s a poor way to generate lust since it equates safe-sex with no sex (or rather, the 1-10% risk rate). You’d need to somehow factor in safer-sex, maybe measuring number of condom sales.

The study on porn consumption was much more telling.

Note the racial disparity.
