Maine House Vote on Marriage Today

Timothy Kincaid

May 5th, 2009

Today the Maine House will vote on whether to allow same-sex couples to marry. As the House is about two thirds Democrat and because over a thrid of House members have signed on as sponsors of the bill, supporters are “cautiously optimistic” of its passage.

Then the bill will go to Governor Baldacci for signature. Although he has opposed same-sex marriage in the past, he has also made recent statements that are encouraging that he may sign the bill.

It is possible that before you go to sleep tonight that Maine will decide to become the fifth state in which same-sex couples may marry.

Update I: You can watch the live debate and vote here.

Update II: The Maine House approved the measure.

Even if it passes, don’t declare anything a done deal: Maine has a “People’s Veto” system which allows a Ballot for putting the Bill up to public vote, and there’s a slight majority opposition according to Polls.

I wonder when will someone take this kind of “People veto” and calleng it in court to make sure that the all knowing and powerful people understand that they are not allowed to play with people’s rights.

The bill was just passed, 89 in the affirmative and 58 in the negative!

Give it a year and enough of the opposition will drop off.

The polls are within the margin of error and I believe some data gives marriage a slight lead. It take a few weeks or months to happen, right? In the past month, 9 of every 100 Americans changed their minds. I can see that in a few more weeks, 1 or 2 more percent of Maine residents change their mind too and tip the scales. I’m not worried.
