Nevada Legislature Overrides Domestic Partnerships Veto

Jim Burroway

May 31st, 2009

The Nevada Assembly voted 28-14 to overturn Gov Jim Gibbons’ veto of a bill to allow domestic partnerships in Nevada for same-sex couples. This vote follows Saturday’s successful 14-7 override vote in the Senate. Nevada now becomes the 17th state to recognize the relationships of same-sex couples. The new law will allow domestic partners to have the same rights as married couples in matters such as community property and responsibility for debts. It also prohibits discrimination against domestic partners.

It’s been a bad year for Gov. Gibbons. With the domestic partnerships bill joins eleven other overrides to make Gov. Gibbons the most overridden governor in Nevada history.

I’m wondering if somebody can compare the Nevada and California statutes and see how similar/different they are.

This I didn’t expect. But domestic partnerships polling at 79% for, 21% against in Nevada is also almost eerie and shocking.

Matt: they’re not even close. California’s domestic partnerships are required by court fiat to give every single right possible except the word “marriage.” Nevada’s doesn’t even require businesses there to provide benefits to employee partners.

To all my buddies in Nevada (mostly in Reno and one in particular who works at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas): Now may you find joy and find a little less to worry about with living in Nevada.

With no State tax and a real estate market that is ripe with bargains perhaps Nevada might become a mecca for gays.

Wow, very pleasant surprise, didn’t think it would make it.

I’m glad the Nevada state legislature helped pump up the Guv’s record. Helpful, ain’t they?
