Obama Chooses Inaction on DADT

Timothy Kincaid

October 4th, 2009

Yesterday we told you of letters sent from the Senate Majority Leader to the President asking for his input on the repeal of the anti-gay military policy, Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. At that time I pondered,

When others have appealed to the President to be proactive, he has dismissed his involvement saying that this is an issue for Congress. It will be interesting to see his response now that Congress has officially invited his input.

We now know the President’s answer: It’s too soon, maybe some other time, not now. (A/P)

President Barack Obama will focus “at the right time” on how to overturn the “don’t ask, don’t tell” ban on gays serving openly in the military, his national security adviser said Sunday.

Jones said Obama “has an awful lot on his desk. I know this is an issue that he intends to take on at the appropriate time. And he has already signaled that to the Defense Department. The Defense Department is doing the things it has to do to prepare, but at the right time, I’m sure the president will take it on.”

I sincerly hope that Congress will do what is right, fair, in the best interest of the military, and the will of the people and continue their plan of action to throw out the ban, despite delays and dismissals of this sort from our community’s “fierce advocate”.

the “right time” of course being “when the republicans wont throw a bitchfit and hurt my popularity” which means “never in a million years”.
Obama is a spineless coward and if their were any other choice but him and the GOP I’d take it in an instant.

Obama is no friend of the gay community.

Finally, others are starting to see the light.

This guy is just a glad hander willing to promise you what you want but not willing to deliver it.

Even if both the DoD begged for the policy to change and the Congress sent a bill up to the president to sign he won’t. Let’s face it, he is a homophobe and transphobic bigot like a lot of the politiicans. He won’t sign any one of his ’8 Golden Promises’ in the next 3 years but you’ll hear him loud and clear promising to sign it and support it if you’ll only vote for him one more time.

Wow, besides wasting 20 years of my life serving my country I wasted 10 minutes writing a post that was removed…. Ok, no more comments and no more of this either.

Ditto to everything Penguinsaur, Patrick and Gina9223 said. I have never regretted voting or campaigning for anyone as much as I regret voting and campaigning for Obama. Next time I will vote Green, vote for whatever Dem wants to run against him, or just leave the president category blank.

Spineless coward, indeed! The president is busy… Bull s**t. As if it is difficult to sign an executive order placing a moratorium on DADT? It doesn’t require much. America is truly losing moral ground, but not in the way that conservatives think. We aren’t the great Human Rights Defender we claim to be (if we ever truly were). God help us!

Dear Mr. President,

I am planning on donating some money to your 2012 re-election effort. However, as you can surely understand, I have a lot on my plate right now, what with the current state of the economy and the fact that I had to take a 5-figure paycut as I transfered from one job to another.

But rest assured, I will send this donation whten the time is right.

We need to shout loudly from the roof tops, “If not now, when?”

I refuse “sometime in the distant unspecified future” as an unacceptable response.

If Dr King had accepted “when the time is right,” would we have a black President today?

I refuse to acknowledge this fair-weather friend as a supporter of the LGBT community.

I refuse to accept mediocrity.

We deserve better.

I hate to say it, as I had very High Hopes for Obama in ’08, but I think he’s going to be a one-termer. Let’s hope the Demo’s get solidly behind someone truly effective. And please don’t vote Green, or any other 3rd party candidates, you’ll just throw the elections to the crazy far right theocrats of the GOP.

I fear that as long as the Democratic and Republican parties have most voters convinced that we have “no where else to go,” the disappointments will continue. In general, the Democrats will keep telling us they’ll take care of us, just be patient, etc. The Republicans, in general, will keep using us as a scare tactic, a wedge issue.

HRC announced today that President Obama will deliver the keynote address at HRC’s 13th Annual Dinner. I hope Mr. Obama surprises me, and uses the occasion to make an announcement about something concrete and specific; something that will have actual consequences in the lives of the majority of us who are not directly involved with the DC Insider realm.

I expect a good speech. I don’t expect to be surprised. But I’ll gladly acknowledge it, if there should be a reason.

A leader of a great army with many Generals.

Should tread lightly on issues that.
The Generals regard highly.

And not harm the people with arms.
People willing to sacrifice.
And obey orders without thought.
Of the consequences to them or theirs.

It is easy to find fault.
A private with bed not taught.
How taught is your bed?!
