What Are Little Boys Made Of?
In this original BTB Investigation, we unveil the tragic story of Kirk Murphy, a four-year-old boy who was treated for “cross-gender disturbance” in 1970 by a young grad student by the name of George Rekers. This story is a stark reminder that there are severe and damaging consequences when therapists try to ensure that boys will be boys.
Slouching Towards Kampala: Uganda’s Deadly Embrace of Hate
When we first reported on three American anti-gay activists traveling to Kampala for a three-day conference, we had no idea that it would be the first report of a long string of events leading to a proposal to institute the death penalty for LGBT people. But that is exactly what happened. In this report, we review our collection of more than 450 posts to tell the story of one nation’s embrace of hatred toward gay people. This report will be updated continuously as events continue to unfold. Check here for the latest updates.
David Benkof: Behind the Mask
At first glance, David Benkof appears to be a young gay man who believes that same-sex marriage will damage the institution of marriage, that there are better options for gay couples than marriage, that the community should join him in prioritizing other more pressing issues, and that the marriage discussion is harming the efforts of gay couples in red states to get recognition for their unions. He also claims that he’s a gay columnist, that he speaks for an influential collection of gay thinkers, and that he is part of the gay and lesbian community and that he shares our goals and dreams. But none of that is true.
“Repeat After Me”: The Reparative Therapy Echo Chamber
The April 2008 edition of the pay-to-publish vanity journal Psychological Reports featured a new report from NARTH. Written by NARTH president A. Dean Byrd, past president Joseph Nicolosi, and Richard W. Potts, the report carries the unwieldy but self-descriptive title, “Clients perceptions of how reorientation therapy and self-help can promote changes in sexual orientation.” While the title describes what the authors meant to show — how clients describe the benefits of reparative therapy — the report itself actually illustrates something very different: the ex-gay movement’s remarkable ability to instill an almost robot-like parroting of ex-gay rhetoric among their clients.
Testing the Premise: Is MRSA The New Gay Plague?
The Toronto Star said that a new study “discover[ed] a new strain” of a super-bug “hitting gay men.” Headlines in Britain screamed, “Flesh-eating bug strikes San Francisco’s gay community,” and anti-gay extremists across America spread the alarm that gays were introducing another plague into “the general population.” But there was a small problem with all of this: None of it is true!
Paul Cameron’s World
In 2005, the Southern Poverty Law Center wrote that “[Paul] Cameron’s ‘science’ echoes Nazi Germany.” What the SPLC didn”t know was Cameron doesn’t just “echo” Nazi Germany. He quoted extensively from one of the Final Solution’s architects. This puts his fascination with quarantines, mandatory tattoos, and extermination being a “plausible idea” in a whole new and deeply disturbing light.
From the Inside: Focus on the Family’s “Love Won Out”
On February 10, I attended an all-day “Love Won Out” ex-gay conference in Phoenix, put on by Focus on the Family and Exodus International. In this series of reports, I talk about what I learned there: the people who go to these conferences, the things that they hear, and what this all means for them, their families and for the rest of us.

The Heterosexual Agenda: Exposing The Myths
At last, the truth can now be told.
Using the same research methods employed by most anti-gay political pressure groups, we examine the statistics and the case studies that dispel many of the myths about heterosexuality. Download your copy today!

Testing The Premise: Are Gays A Threat To Our Children?
Anti-gay activists often charge that gay men and women pose a threat to children. In this report, we explore the supposed connection between homosexuality and child sexual abuse, the conclusions reached by the most knowledgeable professionals in the field, and how anti-gay activists continue to ignore their findings. This has tremendous consequences, not just for gay men and women, but more importantly for the safety of all our children.
Straight From The Source: What the “Dutch Study” Really Says About Gay Couples
Anti-gay activists often cite the “Dutch Study” to claim that gay unions last only about 1½ years and that the these men have an average of eight additional partners per year outside of their steady relationship. In this report, we will take you step by step into the study to see whether the claims are true.
The FRC’s Briefs Are Showing
Tony Perkins’ Family Research Council submitted an Amicus Brief to the Maryland Court of Appeals as that court prepared to consider the issue of gay marriage. We examine just one small section of that brief to reveal the junk science and fraudulent claims of the Family “Research” Council.
Review: The Gay Report
When Karla Jay and Allan Young published The Gay Report in 1979, it quickly a favorite source of statistics for many anti-gay extremists. But before you accepts these statistic at face value, you should examine the inner workings of this survey very carefully. What you learn might surprise you.
Daniel Fetty Doesn’t Count
The FBI’s annual Hate Crime Statistics aren’t as complete as they ought to be, and their report for 2004 was no exception. In fact, their most recent report has quite a few glaring holes. Holes big enough for Daniel Fetty to fall through.

Well…. I know that there is no explicit Biblical “don’t” listed for female masturbation, but aren’t you not supposed to do it when you’re a conservative Christian? Isn’t that considered a sin?
Also, her solo-work means she isn’t technically a slut; only she was involved in the sexual activity.
But it makes me wonder why she made the video in the first place, if it wasn’t a coupling endeavor, as these things tend to be.

btw, apparently the $100,000 being paid to prejean’s lawyer will only cover a fraction of the legal fees. I dunno how large that fraction is but it’s not the whole thing.

Burr, she’s a wingnut. Hypocrisy goes with the job description, so it’s kinda old hat. The interesting stuff is everything else – as long as you have a bottle of emergency brain-bleach handy, of course. Otherwise, give me Bambi and a bullet.

Skanky slut? Really? Is it necessary to call Carrie Prejean a whore to point out that she’s wrong about same-sex marriage?
I’m not buying the “it’s the hypocrisy!” argument here, either. This is just mean-spirited slut-shaming. I normally read BTB because it’s *not* Gawker, thanks.

Timothy didn’t call her a whore. He called her a skanky slut. We don’t know whether that term is technically accurate — for all we know she may be a virgin — so okay, maybe the “slut” part might call for a New York Times-style correction with apologies to sluts everywhere.
Skanky though, that’s about right.

Timothy, I share the anger and disappointment you feel about the results from Maine, but I find your use “skanky slut” very inappropriate. I expect more from BTB. If you need a break to deal with the passions from last night, take one. This is why I’m refraining from posting anything right now because I don’t trust myself to avoid more colorful metaphors…

Liadan,
I think the skanky slut thing is meant to be ironic, because she’s a holier-than-thou christian, and therefore would call someone else a skanky slut for the very same reasons.
I’d be very much surprised if anyone here really had a problem with people who like sex.

I wonder if the readers at the Focus on the Family or WorldNetDaily or Freeper websites take offense and jump to our defense when people call us names the way everyone is falling all over themselves here standing up for the honor of this self-righteous, hypocritical, skanky slut?
John

Perhaps if she is so hard up for cash, she should sell the video, or make a better one.
Or…she could just slink away and disappear. Either would be more productive than her current actions of blaming everyone but herself for her difficulties.

@TampaZeke: I’m not sure if they do or don’t but I’m sure it doesn’t matter. Civil behavior is civil even if the courtesy is not returned.
If the use of “skanky slut” is intended as irony then it might be a little too on-the-nose.
If it’s just name calling then I think a similar article which didn’t employ pejoratives would be classier and more keeping with the level of discourse I’ve grown to expect from BTB.

I offer only the age-old defense: some of my best friends are sluts. Really. You can ask them and they’ll happily tell you. In fact, they probably have video to prove it.
But that isn’t my point.
I know nothing about Carrie Prejean’s personal sex life. She may be a virgin or she may be going on Craig’s List with an ad “door unlocked, lights off, use me”. I really don’t care.
But what I do care about is Carrie’s character. She has been presented to the nation as a warrior against the sexually wanton culture of homosexuality. She is the face of virtue and biblically correct morals.
But that is not Carrie at all. She is not being true to herself. Instead she has sold herself out, marketed both her looks and her values, and taken a position for sexual prudity that clearly was not important to her when she was filming herself gettin’ happy. She sold her body – and her soul – to the first bidder that came along. She didn’t even hold out for a staff position or a career promise. She was cheap and easy.
Regardless of what Carrie does or does not do in bed (or the kitchen table), when it comes to personal character and moral worth, Carrie Prejean is a skanky slut.
And if she doesn’t already, I think she will soon regret crawling in bed with those she was to quick to throw herself at.

I think she will soon regret crawling in bed with those she was to quick to throw herself at.
If you’re referring to NOM, it may be too much to think that she’ll regret crawling into bed with them, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they already regret allowing her into the bed with them–and, in fact, inviting her to come in.
While I do have qualms about the “skanky slut” remark–like Priya and others I don’t think it’s a bad thing–I get that the real issue is Prejean’s superior attitude. My first reaction–before I read the story–was to give her some benefit of the doubt. I thought possibly she’d made the tape with some guy and he’d released it. The devil is in the details, though–this was a solo tape and it sounds like it was made for promotional purposes.

“I offer only the age-old defense: some of my best friends are sluts.”
Timothy, sadly this (presumably) tongue-in-cheek defense is as tone deaf as the post it refers to. The truth is you just don’t do snark terribly well. There’s nothing wrong with that–and you do many other things quite well–but please (Jim’s indulgent comment aside) it really doesn’t reflect well on you or this site when you try to be bitchy and funny and toss off misogynistic slurs…
Not to mention, that first sentence is a grammatical train wreck. Post fail.

Timothy, whether it’s metaphorical or otherwise, you’re still saying ‘slut’ like it’s a bad thing. Would some of your best friends approve of that?
Her hypocrisy is amusing (and always was blatant, video or no video) but this language is not cool. I would appreciate that New York Times style apology, Jim.

While I don’t like people saying “slut” like its a bad thing, I think Timothy has a point. As he said “She has been presented to the nation as a warrior against the sexually wanton culture of homosexuality.” and yet her behavior doesn’t live up to the same religious standards used to condemn gays – its highly hypocritical.

@Priya Lynn-I think you’re quite right, and that’s what’s most regrettable about Timothy’s tone in this post. Prejean’s hypocrisy is blatant and deserves to be noted, but the manner of delivery here distracts with its poor taste.

Ummm…I really don’t know about the tone thing. My “You say skanky slut like its a bad thing” remark was a bit tongue in cheek. Overall I really don’t have much of a problem with the tone of this post – I think it makes the hypocrisy thing pretty apparent and is consistent with how a religious conservative would likely view things.

It wouldn’t be the Salt Lake Tribune nor the Mormon-owned Deseret News. I didn’t get the feeling Mormons were giving Ms. Prejean any accolades. In fact, most Mormons I know were not thrilled with how the former Miss California acted and probably knew to keep away from her. It was mostly the Evangelical Christians that came to her defense.
Unless I missed some rant on Mormon Glenn Beck’s show?

what’s not slutty about making a bunch of JO vids of yourself to send to some guy you just met 4 days ago?
It’s my understanding these weren’t sent to some long term bf, but a man she had only just begun seeing.
So, yes, I would call that rather slutty. Not that there’s anything wrong with being a slut — unless you’re presenting yourself as a chaste and pure warrior for God against wickedness.
Apparently marriage is between a woman, a man she just met, a camera phone, and a well-placed mirror.
I wonder what God was telling her when she was making 8 films and 30 photos — “make sure you charge the battery” ?
