Save The Blade

Jim Burroway

November 18th, 2009

The staff of the Washington Blade now have an online presence here. You will soon be able to buy a brick here. They say that they will have a modest premiere of their new publication on Friday, Nov. 20. However modest that issue might be, it will still be a remarkable achievement, and indicative of the tremendous talent and drive of everyone at the Blade. It’s no wonder the Blade has been such a vitally important news source not just for Washington, but for the LGBT community nationwide. These are the people who made it so essential.

I’d love to donate to get them back into publication, but what will they do with the money I send them?

Are they just going to launch as an independent publisher? And if so, will they be publishing in a format that will be available to me in NY or will it be a local paper only?

I prefer to let the free market work. Life changes. Some companies thrive and survive and others do not. I think donating funds to the thousands of needy folks all around us is a better use of any money we are looking to donate. The public bailing out another company is NOT the answer to anything. NO brick donation from me and I hope others use their common sense to as opposed to romanticism of the past. The Blade is dead. Move on!

Oakland, if people want the blade back bad enough to donate money toward its revival, isn’t that essentially the same thing as letting the free market work?
