February 16th, 2010

The legalization of same-sex marriage in Portugal has now passed its second hurdle. (Vancouver Sun)

Portuguese lawmakers Thursday definitively adopted legislation legalising homosexual marriage, although President Anibal Cavaco Silva, a practising Roman Catholic, must give final approval.

The bill will now go to President Anibal Cavaco Silva for signature. It is expected that if he vetoes the bill, there will be an override.

I’m glad that some parts of the world are marching forward towards equality while so many other areas are taking 20 steps backwards.

Are there any signs that the president will veto, (symbolically, or otherwise)?

If he does veto, does it go back to the Legislature for a 2nd vote to over-ride the veto?

Has anyone commented on the possibility that legislators in the president’s party may switch their vote in the event of having to over-ride a veto?

And this is gay marriage right? It’s not partnership or union or committment or some of those other token gesture?
