An Answer to LaBarbera’s Challenge to the SPLC

Peter “Porno Pete” LaBarbera has found himself as a new addition to the Southern Poverty Law Center’s list of anti-gay hate groups, along with the Family “Research” Council and eleven others. In addition to citing the debunked research of Nazi-sympathiser Paul Cameron, LaBarbara was called out by the SPLC several other actions:

In 2007, LaBarbera claimed there was “a disproportionate incidence of pedophilia” among gay men — yet another false assertion. The same year, he posted an open letter to the Lithuanian people from long-time gay-basher Scott Lively (see Abiding Truth Ministries, above), who has made a series of false claims about gays running the German Nazi Party. In the piece posted to the AFTAH website, Lively said homosexuals are trying to take away free speech from all opponents of gays and to silence all religious opinions on the matter.

LaBarbera recently challenged the SPLC to disprove the “disproportionate incidence of pedophilia” claim once more. But experts in the field already have, and we summarized those findings more than five years ago in our report, “Testing The Premise: Are Gays A Threat To Our Children?”  The bottom line is this: The experts agree that there is no evidence whatsoever that gay men and women who are out in their adult lives are any more likely to abuse children than straight men and women.

And that is the point Jim. The information, the evidence, the professionals and credible experts have disproved ALL and everything of what Matt Barber, Peter LaB and massresistance keep saying.

Not only that, but Tony Perkins, and his ilk, distort and misrepresent other professionals, even ignoring it when those professionals say so.

When Peter LaB chooses to ignore or outright lies and distorts what information is out there, we shouldn’t have to be the ones to keep answering him as if it doesn’t or never existed.

He keeps moving the goal line, and daring us to cross it or meet it.

There is another article in TownHall this morning trying to put doubt in the cred of the SPLC. Not only that, but the articles is posited as if they profit the most from hating the haters and inflate who and how many haters there are.

I just got the SPLC’s magazine, The Intelligence Report. They are covering hate crimes against gay people more heavily in this issue. They do it at least twice a year that they focus on gay issues.

The most important thing, is results.
No one from NOM, FRC and so on can actually say that an anti gay Christian has had their house burned down, got beaten up in the street or their children bullied to the point of suicide.
They can’t point to any government action against them by way of censoring, or equal rights and protections from the Constitution. They have no evidence, that the responses from gay people have resulted in anything even CLOSE that endangers their lives, livelihoods or freedoms.

Yet, they either complain it’s happened from stretches of imagination rather than reality, or that it inevitably will happen, even though after years of waiting, it never has.

Even in this article, the SPLC is dismissed as focusing on 8,000 KKK members too small in number to be concerned about.
But sometimes it only takes ONE person to commit devastating LETHAL crimes.
Case in point, Benjamin Smith, a follower of Matt Hale of the former Christian Identity.
It only took 19 terrorists to kill nearly 3,000 people in a single morning.

I’d like to hear what your take is on the article.

One thing is for sure, being anti gay hasn’t done ANY good for anyone. Bans and discrimination haven’t saved marriage, nor actual marriages and families. Nor has the military been served well by the same, or acts of such against gay people in different localities across the country.

I’d love for the FRC and NOM to point to anything that actually has done something tangibly good that’s saved society and made it better because of THEIR actions.
Rather than pointing at how bad they think gay people are.

Very well put, Regan

Regan — very eloquent and right on point. The sad part is, it doesn’t matter. They will continue to misrepresent research, they will continue to cite Paul Cameron (although they won’t admit it), they will continue to point to examples of how “Christians” are persecuted — without noting that they happened in other countries with different laws — and they will continue to make up outright lies, secure in the knowledge that their followers will never bother to check the facts.

And they will write OpEds for right-wing publications — and even mainstream publications — and appear on talk shows, where the hosts will never challenge them.

And if they are challenged, as has happened a couple times recently with Tony Perkins, they will change the subject.

So we’re the ones who have to point out that they are, indeed, liars and haters. And we have to do it again, and again, and again.

What Are Little Boys Made Of?

In this original BTB Investigation, we unveil the tragic story of Kirk Murphy, a four-year-old boy who was treated for “cross-gender disturbance” in 1970 by a young grad student by the name of George Rekers. This story is a stark reminder that there are severe and damaging consequences when therapists try to ensure that boys will be boys.

Slouching Towards Kampala: Uganda’s Deadly Embrace of Hate

When we first reported on three American anti-gay activists traveling to Kampala for a three-day conference, we had no idea that it would be the first report of a long string of events leading to a proposal to institute the death penalty for LGBT people. But that is exactly what happened. In this report, we review our collection of more than 500 posts to tell the story of one nation’s embrace of hatred toward gay people. This report will be updated continuously as events continue to unfold. Check here for the latest updates.

Paul Cameron’s World

In 2005, the Southern Poverty Law Center wrote that “[Paul] Cameron’s ‘science’ echoes Nazi Germany.” What the SPLC didn”t know was Cameron doesn’t just “echo” Nazi Germany. He quoted extensively from one of the Final Solution’s architects. This puts his fascination with quarantines, mandatory tattoos, and extermination being a “plausible idea” in a whole new and deeply disturbing light.

From the Inside: Focus on the Family’s “Love Won Out”

On February 10, I attended an all-day “Love Won Out” ex-gay conference in Phoenix, put on by Focus on the Family and Exodus International. In this series of reports, I talk about what I learned there: the people who go to these conferences, the things that they hear, and what this all means for them, their families and for the rest of us.

The Heterosexual Agenda: Exposing The Myths

At last, the truth can now be told.

Testing The Premise: Are Gays A Threat To Our Children?

Anti-gay activists often charge that gay men and women pose a threat to children. In this report, we explore the supposed connection between homosexuality and child sexual abuse, the conclusions reached by the most knowledgeable professionals in the field, and how anti-gay activists continue to ignore their findings. This has tremendous consequences, not just for gay men and women, but more importantly for the safety of all our children.

Straight From The Source: What the “Dutch Study” Really Says About Gay Couples

Anti-gay activists often cite the “Dutch Study” to claim that gay unions last only about 1½ years and that the these men have an average of eight additional partners per year outside of their steady relationship. In this report, we will take you step by step into the study to see whether the claims are true.

The FRC’s Briefs Are Showing

Tony Perkins’ Family Research Council submitted an Amicus Brief to the Maryland Court of Appeals as that court prepared to consider the issue of gay marriage. We examine just one small section of that brief to reveal the junk science and fraudulent claims of the Family “Research” Council.

Daniel Fetty Doesn’t Count

Daniel FettyThe FBI’s annual Hate Crime Statistics aren’t as complete as they ought to be, and their report for 2004 was no exception. In fact, their most recent report has quite a few glaring holes. Holes big enough for Daniel Fetty to fall through.
