Snowe backs DADT repeal

As anticipated, Sen. Olympia Snowe (R-ME) has added herself to the list of those favoring repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. (Press Herald)

“After careful analysis of the comprehensive report compiled by the Department of Defense and thorough consideration of the testimony provided by the Secretary of Defense, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the service chiefs, I support repeal of the ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ law,” Snowe said in a statement.

Incidentally, the list of official co-sponsors is now up to 45. That does not include some who, like Sen. Snowe, have expressed intention to support repeal.

This pretty much ensure that there will be 60 votes.

57 Dems (58 minus Manchin) + Collins + Snowe + Brown/Lugar/Murkowski/Voinovich/Kirk/Gregg.

Ensign has already stated that he will vote no, even though he thinks that DADT should be repealed. I hope the other Republicans don’t copy his cop-out.

Brown and Murkowski both support repeal. Kirk likely will too. I know Lugar said he doesn’t, which is surprising since previously he seemed very supportive. Didn’t know that about Ensign.

Now we’re looking at a time issue, and how many roadblocks McCain and other Republicans can put up to block a vote. Seems like there’s always a randomn Senate rule that gets trotted out at times like these.

As we have seen with Brown, a Statement is not equivalent to a Vote.

Now is the time! Contact your Senators:

Tell them to “Pass DADT repeal or be voted out in the next elections”

Good for Olympia.

Now if she could get her fellow senator from Maine to stop ####ing around and support this thing.

Matt,

By “support this thing”, do you mean something other than

* be the original co-sponsor of the amendment to the defense bill

* lobby fellow Republicans on the issue

* try to negotiate with Reid a way in which other Republicans could support the defense bill

* argue on the floor with Reid for a way to get the bill passed instead of killed in a procedural move

* vote for cloture on the defense bill anyway

* when that failed, immediately craft and co-sponsor with Lieberman a stand-alone bill

Because really, Matt, I’m not sure what else you expect from Susan Collins.

The clock is ticking and there are more important matters on Mr. Ried’s calendar.

“The clock is ticking and there are more important matters on Mr. Ried’s calendar.”

To his great credit, Reid has it on his calendar for today. Hope it has 60 votes!

Slouching Towards Kampala: Uganda’s Deadly Embrace of Hate

When we first reported on three American anti-gay activists traveling to Kampala for a three-day conference, we had no idea that it would be the first report of a long string of events leading to a proposal to institute the death penalty for LGBT people. But that is exactly what happened. In this report, we review our collection of more than 500 posts to tell the story of one nation’s embrace of hatred toward gay people. This report will be updated continuously as events continue to unfold. Check here for the latest updates.

Paul Cameron’s World

In 2005, the Southern Poverty Law Center wrote that “[Paul] Cameron’s ‘science’ echoes Nazi Germany.” What the SPLC didn”t know was Cameron doesn’t just “echo” Nazi Germany. He quoted extensively from one of the Final Solution’s architects. This puts his fascination with quarantines, mandatory tattoos, and extermination being a “plausible idea” in a whole new and deeply disturbing light.

From the Inside: Focus on the Family’s “Love Won Out”

On February 10, I attended an all-day “Love Won Out” ex-gay conference in Phoenix, put on by Focus on the Family and Exodus International. In this series of reports, I talk about what I learned there: the people who go to these conferences, the things that they hear, and what this all means for them, their families and for the rest of us.
