Student Senate Says No To Funding Mike Haley’s Speech

haley.jpgMike Haley is the manager of community education/mobilization for Focus on the Family’s Community Impact Outreach division, aka political activist.

Haley has a testimony about how he was once a gay prostitute but now he’s a husband and a father. And though that endears him to some, those who know and like gay folk are less likely to want to listen to his gay-cure tale.

The student senate at Hastings College, a private liberal arts school in Nebraska affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA), is one such group. The Campus Crusade sought to bring Haley on campus to speak and asked the senate for funding. The association emailed the student body and from the responses determined that about 70% did not want their student fees spent for that purpose. So the student group is denying funding.

Campus Crusade will now ask local churches to sponsor Mike Haley’s speech.

$1200 bucks to find out that “[T]he opposite of homosexuality is not heterosexuality—it’s holiness.” And that freedom from homosexuality is: “A freedom that for some will include heterosexual desires.” (Emphasis in original)

Or they could just buy his book for about $12 bucks, read that part and be done with it. It’s on page 134. It would save time, money, and minds.

The purpose of this isn’t to educate, its to legitimise – people will respect advice more of they have paid heavily for it, even if its really bad.

I would like to update on this story since I live in Nebraska. Hayel will be speaking on May 31st the Campus Crusade raised the money through local churches.

There will be a speaker on April 2 that tells a different story of how these ministries and ideas are harmful. The speaker is myself.

FYI: The Campus Crusade group found funding for the event and he spoke there on this last Monday. It turned into the largest event held at the college in years. Mike gave a message of hope and tolerance. He really did a lot to bridge the gap between the Christian and Homosexual communities. About half in attendence were there in support of GLBT causes and groups and they walked away in awe of the message that Mike gave.

What I love about this line of his (opposite of homosexuality is holiness – aka purity) is that he is arguing homosexuality is a purity violation – that, of course, is consistent with what many pro-gay theologians say is at the heart of the Old Testament condemnation. It’s important because we are no longer under the purity code.

“about half in attendence were there in support of GLBT causes and groups and they walked away in awe of the message that Mike gave.”

More likely they walked away in sadness and stunned silence. The message that they are devalued as a human being because of the way they love another human being is depressing and, when you get right down to it, evil and hateful – the OPPOSITE of love.

“truth comes out” – lolz, nice alias…

CHANGE IS POSSIBLE!*

* This statement has not been evaluated by the FDA. Change may or may not include a change in perspective and or behavior. Homosexual thoughts, desires, dreams, and feelings may still occur. In clincal studies, “changed” individuals did experience some persistent homosexual thoughts, ideas, dreams, and desires. Side effects may include, loss of libido, depression and or suicidal thoughts. Marriage to the opposite sex is not recommended. Change may not be permanent. Change may not be possible for most consumers. Results will vary.

Emily K…Were you there? Did you hear his message? His said numerous times that we need to be more tolerant of each other, people should be free to live their lives however they choose, we need to have mutual respect for each other, and finally people should be given choices on how they can live their lives. How is that devalue them as human beings? Maybe you shouldn’t make assumptions about his message when you weren’t there.

truth comes out,

I wasn’t there, but it appears that you were. Can you please clarify for me?

When he spoke about people being free to live their lives, did he also mean the freedom to marry the person they love? Or did he speak out about protecting marriage?

Did he mention any other social issues such as the ban in the military, hate crimes laws, anti-discrimination laws, or other civil legislation? Did he talk about removing “the homosexual agenda” from schools?

Did Haley imply that “change” can be achieved in orientation? Did he misquote Jones and Yarhouse? Did he talk about “tens (or hundreds) of thousands” who had “walked away from homosexuality”? Or did he explain that efforts to change orientaion are very rarely successful and then never complete?

If Haley came to find common ground or build bridges, then his words are most welcome.

But if Haley came to stir up political activism against a minority population or to offer false hope, then I’m sure you can understand how I would find him objectionable.

People listening to unlearned nonsense like Haley’s should start reading. Read widely. Start with the pre-Socratics and don’t stop until you get through at least Kant. Try Foucault and understand changes in the medical field, particularly in psychology, during the last one hundred years. If you’re straight, overcome your irrational fear of homosexuality; if you’re gay, embrace that component of yourself. You’re entitled to have the full range of human experiences assumed by your straight counterparts. Shut out anyone who tries to convince you otherwise.

What Are Little Boys Made Of?

In this original BTB Investigation, we unveil the tragic story of Kirk Murphy, a four-year-old boy who was treated for “cross-gender disturbance” in 1970 by a young grad student by the name of George Rekers. Slouching Towards Kampala: Uganda’s Deadly Embrace of Hate

When we first reported on three American anti-gay activists traveling to Kampala for a three-day conference, we had no idea that it would be the first report of a long string of events leading to a proposal to institute the death penalty for LGBT people. But that is exactly what happened. In this report, we review our collection of more than 500 posts to tell the story of one nation’s embrace of hatred toward gay people. This report will be updated continuously as events continue to unfold. Check here for the latest updates.

Paul Cameron’s World

In 2005, the Southern Poverty Law Center wrote that “[Paul] Cameron’s ‘science’ echoes Nazi Germany.” What the SPLC didn”t know was Cameron doesn’t just “echo” Nazi Germany. He quoted extensively from one of the Final Solution’s architects. This puts his fascination with quarantines, mandatory tattoos, and extermination being a “plausible idea” in a whole new and deeply disturbing light.
