Hawaii to get Civil Unions

Jim Burroway

February 16th, 2011

In an 18-5 vote this afternoon, the Hawaii Senate gave its final legislative approval to SB 232, a bill that will allow civil unions for same-sex couples. The bill now goes to Gov. Neil Abercrimbie (D), who says he will sign the bill within the next 10 days. Civil Unions will become available on January 1, 2012.

Hawaii’s version of civil unions will offer all of the state-level benefits of marriage. Civil unions performed in other states which grant them will be recognized in Hawaii as well.

Umm… Jan 1, 2012?

I’m really confused here. If the legislation is passed in the next 10 days, it’s going to take 10 months before they can issue the first civil unions?

Are we celebrating this good news? At the very least this should show a vulnerability in the power of NOM (a.k.a. the Mormons) in Hawaiian politics? All the work of the Mormons in Hawaii was for naught. Or are Mormons okay with gay civil marriages now?

Hmmm…I have less than 10 months to prepare for a wedding next January.

Congratulations for those in Hawaii.
