A man and a man on Mann

Timothy Kincaid

March 15th, 2011

Congrats to the residents of the Isle of Man. (BBC)

Gay couples on the Isle of Man will get the right to a civil partnership after a new law was signed in Tynwald, the island’s parliament.

It gives them the same rights as married couples regarding inheritance, pensions and tax allowances.

Which brings the British Crown Dependency into alignment with the UK.

What or who is the “Mann” referred to in the title?

The Isle of Man is also known as Mann. Apparently, when it’s “Isle of” it has one N but when just referred to by one word it gets a second N.

… And the people of Mann are known as the “Manx.”

I’d never noticed that it had only one n when it’s “Isle of”.

I’d like to visit Mann some day.

Fascinating, I’d never noticed the two “n” version, but I’ve never been there either.
