A quote worth memorizing

Timothy Kincaid

May 5th, 2011

During the debate over whether to propose a ban on marriage equality, Minnesota Representative Steve Simon (D) asked his fellow legislators to take a moment at some point to seriously consider how the biological contributions to the development of sexual orientation impact the morality of their opposition to gay rights.

Simon then put it “into the vernacular” and asked a question that goes to the very heart of religious objection:

“How many more gay people does God have to create before we ask ourselves whether or not God actually wants them around?”

I know this is an emotional appeal and not a logical one, but it bothers me just how easily it can be turned on its head – simply substitute “gay” for any number of naturally occurring things that we would rather not believe have God’s approval.

Michael,

Sure, but then the question becomes whether or not the substation of ‘gay’ for something else is really a valid substitution.

Other things you might try and substitute it for actually cause demonstrable harm, whereas being gay doesn’t…

You can’t understand the completeness of the argument unless you truly understand what being gay means… and that understanding has to include that being gay isn’t harmful in any way.
