Last night was the West Coast premiere of of a reading of Dustin Lance Black’s play “8”, based in the trial transcripts of the Federal Lawsuit that resulted in Prop 8 being declared unconstitutional. If you didn’t get a chance to see it as it streamed live last night, you can catch it here.

I’m glad this is even online at all, and I don’t actually expect anyone here to have an answer handy… but why would anyone put up a (non-live) video with that much nothing at the beginning, even with a “skip to the real stuff” button?

My guess is that all that much nothing was for the people who started the streaming early. For what I can see, they started the streaming 15 minutes before.

Watched this today. Really fantastic to see all the stars and familiar faces that performed and a great condencing of the trial. It took me hours to read the entire transcript, so getting the whole thing in 90 minutes makes for a nice primer. Would love to see the movie version with this cast.

Some observations though:

It would be nice if, like in the legal team, there were some more representatives from the “conservative” side. Some people are going to see Goerge Clooney, Rob Riener and Martin Sheen and just tune out due their well-known liberal politics.

It was difficult to tell sometimes if the stammering delivery was because that’s what was in the transcript or if the actor misread the lines. I understand that this is verbatim theater but professional actors reading from scripts was a little distracting.

This was not a performance, but a reading, so actors stammering or misreading the lines should be expected as they did not work for months at a time to memorise their lines and work on a blocking.

I really liked seeing professionals like these reading from a script cold-call style. It’s something we rarely get to see though it is an intregal part of their profession. Loved the whole thing and it will be very influential in the tipping point towards total marriage equity.

Very cool.

This was so moving and empowering to me as a gay man. I felt tears come to my eyes with the interaction of the moms and their kids. I am so glad this is available to everyone to see!

Désirée, The attorney for the anti side, Charles Cooper does stammer, he was played by Kevin Bacon.
If you go to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals the Appeals Hearing is available on video. You can see that Cooper stammers, or maybe kind of grunts. It is hard to describe, but I think Kevin Bacon brought that into the reading.

The real video of the first Prop 8 Trial under Judge Walker is under seal for 10 years.(it is either 10 years or 7 years I forget which) Then if anyone wants to keep it under seal they have to go back and petition the court. Eventually the video of the Real Prop 8 Trial will be released and will find it’s place in History.

Slouching Towards Kampala: Uganda’s Deadly Embrace of Hate

When we first reported on three American anti-gay activists traveling to Kampala for a three-day conference, we had no idea that it would be the first report of a long string of events leading to a proposal to institute the death penalty for LGBT people. Paul Cameron’s World

In 2005, the Southern Poverty Law Center wrote that “[Paul] Cameron’s ‘science’ echoes Nazi Germany.” What the SPLC didn”t know was Cameron doesn’t just “echo” Nazi Germany. He quoted extensively from one of the Final Solution’s architects. This puts his fascination with quarantines, mandatory tattoos, and extermination being a “plausible idea” in a whole new and deeply disturbing light.
