The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation has announced their first round of winners of the 23rd Annual GLAAD Media Awards on Saturday. CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360 won for Outstanding TV Journalism — News Magazine for their series, “The Sissy Boy Experiments.” (You can see parts one, two, three and four.) The series told the story of four-year-old Kirk Andrew Murphy’s failed treatment at UCLA to “cure” his homosexuality. That same story was the focus of BTB’s original investigation, What Are Little Boys Made Of, which has been nominated for Outstanding Digital Journalism Article. That category will be announced at the GLAAD event in San Francisco on June 2.
You can see a complete rundown of all of the awards here. Congratulations to all of the winners. Five more awards will be awarded in Los Angeles April 21, and five more in San Francisco in June.
UPDATE: While I’m thrilled that CNN won for The Sissy Boy Experiments, the award is a very bitter pull for the investigative journalism team that worked so hard on that series. Last Friday, CNN announced deep layoffs in the investigative journalism division Which means that many (perhaps all) of the people working behind the scenes to bring you that story are getting the ax.

Anti-gay activists often charge that gay men and women pose a threat to children. While I am thrilled that Anderson / CNN won the GLAAD media award for their category, I was very sad to have learned the day before that CNN would be outsourcing their long format division. It’s hard to think that such a talented team will be cut loose, especially when the story (and no doubt so many others) wouldn’t have stood a chance without them.
