Oh, that’s definitely him. I say that as a “graduate” of Love In Action.

Aaron,
Well if you graduated that means you passed most of your classes with passing grades, right?

Is ‘Love in Action’ the same as ‘Church of the Open Door’ in San Rafael, California? I remember calling them back in the early 80’s when I was just coming out and struggling with being gay.

Ben, they started in San Rafael and at some point moved their inpatient treatment to Memphis, if I recall correctly.

Be,
I am about half way through a book on the outfit in California. It was a doctoral thesis and truthfully reads more like a doctoral thesis than a book. I put it down a couple months ago, I really should pick it up again and finish it. I bought it on Amazon as an e-book, it was real inexpensive around 9 bucks i think.

That church “Church of the Open Door” is mentioned quite a bit in the book,-Straight To Jesus: Sexual and Christian Conversions in the Ex-Gay Movement.

I don’t have a Kindle but Amazon has a free app you can download and read Kindle Books on your computer or iPad.

Yes, This American Life, facilitated over 6 hours of recorded interviews with me personally, and other interviews with Morgan Jon Fox.

Love In Action was developed in 1973 and a couple of years later became affiliated with “Church of the Open Door” in San Rafael, CA.

The only official affiliation that Love In Action had with Church of the Open Door was that the ministry founder, Frank Worthen, was an “Elder” at Church of the Open Door and continues to be one there as far as I know, today.

In 1994 under my direction, Love In Action moved to Memphis, TN.

Slouching Towards Kampala: Uganda’s Deadly Embrace of Hate

When we first reported on three American anti-gay activists traveling to Kampala for a three-day conference, we had no idea that it would be the first report of a long string of events leading to a proposal to institute the death penalty for LGBT people. But that is exactly what happened. In this report, we review our collection of more than 500 posts to tell the story of one nation’s embrace of hatred toward gay people. This report will be updated continuously as events continue to unfold. Check here for the latest updates.

Paul Cameron’s World

In 2005, the Southern Poverty Law Center wrote that “[Paul] Cameron’s ‘science’ echoes Nazi Germany.” What the SPLC didn”t know was Cameron doesn’t just “echo” Nazi Germany. He quoted extensively from one of the Final Solution’s architects. This puts his fascination with quarantines, mandatory tattoos, and extermination being a “plausible idea” in a whole new and deeply disturbing light.

From the Inside: Focus on the Family’s “Love Won Out”

On February 10, I attended an all-day “Love Won Out” ex-gay conference in Phoenix, put on by Focus on the Family and Exodus International. In this series of reports, I talk about what I learned there: the people who go to these conferences, the things that they hear, and what this all means for them, their families and for the rest of us.

Daniel FettyThe FBI’s annual Hate Crime Statistics aren’t as complete as they ought to be, and their report for 2004 was no exception. In fact, their most recent report has quite a few glaring holes. Holes big enough for Daniel Fetty to fall through.
