The Ice Broke On The Santa Cruz River Today

Jim Burroway

April 22nd, 2012

That’s Tucson lingo for the first day of the year when temperatures reach 100 degrees, which occurred at 1:51 p.m. As you can see from that link, guessing when the ice breaks is the subject of office pools and radio/television station contests. Today’s ice break is the second earliest date since record-keeping began in 1895.

By the way, this is what the Santa Cruz looks like once the ice has broken. I think it’s adorable how Google Maps colors it blue.

Shouldn’t there be a little water?

You know, when Tucsonans go elsewhere and the locals ask what the visitors think of their river, the response is “Well, I can’t really tell what the river looks like–it’s full of water!”

There’s not much blue on the Google Map (or vegetation), so it seems like Tucson is a God forsaken place. But then again, I’ve only lived in Minnesota or on a coast, places with very obvious water and a lot of green… I look at that picture and worry for you folks.
