Another ABC Poll, yet more good marriage news

Timothy Kincaid

May 23rd, 2012

23. On another subject, do you think it should be legal or illegal for gay and lesbian couples to get married? Do you feel that way strongly or somewhat?

39% – strongly legal
14% – somewhat legal
7% – somewhat illegal
32% – strongly illegal
8% – “Oh, gee, I don’t know. Do you like my hair?”

Analysis of the full polling demographics (pdf) suggests to me that those who believe that God has ordained them to dictate to you the details of your life are not shifting on this issue. But they are rapidly losing influence over everyone else.

And the whole time he was running I thought the ‘ole Frothy Mix would be MY undoing.

Man was I wrong… 7% strongly for gap… my oh my… When I was a kid I never thought I’d get married, then I thought I’d get married but it’d never be recognized in my hometown, now… man. The sky’s the limit.

Although I can’t silence my inner skeptic: another way to read that poll (especially in the light of the NC results which were so far off the poll numbers) is that a large portion of that 8% who are worried about their hair-do probably think gay marriage is a terrible idea but are too polite to say so out-loud.

That cross-over to the No camp may even bleed into the “somewhat legal” category. Perhaps some of those somewhats go for NO on the question of gay marriage and YES on the question of civil unions. I’m a little curious why they didn’t structure civil unions into the poll.

Not to rain on the parade though; this poll is good news no matter what way one slices it.
