Yet again, French Quarter spared

Timothy Kincaid

August 30th, 2012

If God keeps sending hurricanes to punish Teh Gheys for Southern Decadence, he has an odd way of administering them. (USA Today)

New Orleans’ historic French Quarter appeared to have dodged the worst of Isaac. Downed tree limbs, minor flooding at intersections and a brief electrical outage overnight were the main problems confronting the residents who stayed.

“Honestly, man, it’s just been rain,” said Huggington “Huggy” Behr, manager of Flanagan’s Pub, which remained open through the night. “To us, we’ve seen the worst, so it’s business as usual.”

New Orleans businesses fretted that the lingering storm would hamper this weekend’s three-day Southern Decadence gay celebration, which organizers say draws up to 100,000 visitors. Round-the-clock activities are scheduled, mostly around the dozen French Quarter bars and adjoining neighborhood.

I was in New Orleans just five days after Katrina — the place was still without electricity, streets flooded, roads impassable by debris, etc etc. I was assisting the Czech & Slovak press cover the story. I noticed that all the rainbow banners were still flying from the Rampart Street light poles. Not a one was ripped, torn or missing. I took a picture and sent it to all the gay publications I could find, and many a friend. (I would be glad to send it to you all.)

Meanwhile, Katrina pretty much destroyed most churches in the city. Those not destroyed completely were only partially damaged. The gay bars were among the first businesses reopened; none sustained any damage whatsoever. Hmm, God is on whose side?

Hold on! I’m still waiting for someone to explain why God continues to relentlessly pelt the Bible Belt with tornadoes every single year, without fail. The old saying is certainly true, “God is faithful.”

This almighty god also seems to have it in for the Republicans as well. I heard that Mittens was whining about all of the press issuing bulletins about the weather instead of attending to convention activities. Seems even St. Macaroni or what ever his name is doesn’t care if Mittens wins.

When we returned to New Orleans after Katrina, we had to travel through Texas, which had just been hit by Hurricane Rita. Even from the Interstate we could see lots of churches that had been damaged throughout Texas. We finally got home to New Orleans, which was a mess in so many ways. Many churches had been completely destroyed. But, as Jim Hlavac notes above, the French Quarter was in good shape and not a single gay bar in the Quarter was damaged.

I turned to my friend and asked, “Who do you think God loves?”
