Tasmania votes on marriage today

Timothy Kincaid

September 26th, 2012

The Tasmanian House approved a marriage bill last month, 13 votes to 11. The Senate has been debating the bill since yesterday and it is expected to reach a vote today. If it passes, Tasmania will be the first Australian state with marriage equality. However, questions still remain about its legality as marriage has traditionally been a federal issue.

The bill was defeated in the upper house late this evening (Australain Time). The final count was 6 votes to 8 with one abstention in the 15 member upper house. Tasmania is one of the smallest states in Australia so it has a delete let small parliament.

Three other states have bills to be voted on in the coming month. New South Wales looks like it will be the next state ready to vote followed by South Australia the Western Australia.

Correction: there was no abstention. The 15th member of the upper house acts as the speakers and only votes if there is a tie.
