It seems that she is excessively polite because that’s just Asian culture. They don’t necessarily say what they really think in public. It’s a frequent problem in business talks for example.

Also in keeping with East Asian culture, her father may indeed genuinely be okay with her homosexuality but not with her unmarried status. The $65 million would then be an incentive to enter a sham marriage to save face for his family by being able to keep up the appearance of being normal. If she was a straight woman who’d sworn off marriage, he might be doing the same thing (though the “price” probably wouldn’t be as high).

Which isn’t to say it’s not homophobia, just that homophobia is part of a larger framework of thought in East Asia summarized in the proverb “The nail that sticks out gets hammered down.” The endless need to conform to a single social norm *is* changing, but there’s a big generational gap in that change.

Respect for one’s parents is a major tenet of Confucian philosophy and ethics.
