What Did Your Representative Do for National Coming Out Day?

Jim Burroway

October 11th, 2012

Twenty-six members of Congress participated in a photo shoot last month to have their portraits made for the NoH8 Campaign. Those photos were made public today in honor of National Coming Out Day. They join eleven others who had their portraits taken earlier this year. Their photos are below. If your representatives are represented, you might want to take time out to thank them.

I can’t find anything on what he did today, but chances are it wasn’t anything good; he was in the news a few days ago for saying embryology, the Big Bang, and evolution are from Hell.

My rep, Barbara Lee, is part of the original 11. Love her.

Someone needs to explain this campaign to me. I don’t get what it’s supposed to mean: to support gay Americans we should be gagged? It looks to me like an exercise in self-congratulation. But I’m prepared to be educated.

Plus they’re all Democrats: who could have predicted?

The “No H8″ campaign, to date, has produced two PSAs and made donations to two AIDS Walks. Google it though I might, I can’t find other activity. Unfortunately, they don’t seem to have done much else. It has raised awareness, true, and having a “No H8 Bouska” portrait seems to have become a trendy feel-good exercise for LGBT allies.

At first I was excited that there were so many Elected-White-Democrats from Georgia & then I looked closer. Sigh.

It seems odd to complain that an awareness campaign hasn’t done much besides raise awareness.
