Cruz’ opponent stays classy

I think I may have underestimated the boxing world.

Two weeks ago I told you about Cuban boxer Orlando Cruz coming out. Now we hear the response of his opponent in Friday’s bout: (BoxingScene.com)

Jorge Pazos

I have to win whether he is gay or not. But I don’t think about that. He made a decision and I respect him for it. That is outside the ring. It is different inside the ring.

Are you worried about losing to a gay man and going home to hecklers in Mexico?

I don’t think about that. I can’t think about that. He is a good boxer, an Olympian.

And that is a classy response. (but I still hope Cruz wins)

Timothy, can I ask you seriously: why don’t you ever seem to proofread your articles? They’re good articles, but they’re always riddled with sloppy mistakes. I’m a long-time reader, and I’m finally asking. Hell, if you need a proofreader, I’ll do it for you.

Proofread? Given that all the errors are in the quote, why didn’t they just cut-and-paste?? (said as a typo-plagued blogger)

Sorry for the typos.

I try to re-read everything I post but in this instance I just didn’t have the time. My job has just gotten very busy and this went up in a rush.

And I have to take blame for the typos. For some reason I couldn’t cut and paste from the source – or find a better one.

Sorry about that.

I don’t mean to shame or nitpick. I really enjoy this website and have for a long time. The typos are just unnecessary distractions.

M,

I understand. I know that we do have typos and that they are, indeed, a distraction.

Once again, I wasn’t looking for any typos but I didn’t see them if they were there.

Priya Lynn,

I fixed the typos after M brought them to my attention. I guess I should have said so.

Yes, I was referring to my first read of your post before you fixed the typos.

Hey M, Do you criticize everything like this? It’s not a big deal. The concise information he gives us simply overpowers your pillories!

Jorge Pazos’ response was classy, but the gay baiting question was pretty shitty.

Ryan, I was thinking the same thing! Pazos was very classy, but the question was offensive. I hope that we are moving past such considerations. Mexico (and Latin america in general) is ahead of the US in many ways related to LGBT equality. Let this be an example to the rest of the sports world.

Slouching Towards Kampala: Uganda’s Deadly Embrace of Hate

When we first reported on three American anti-gay activists traveling to Kampala for a three-day conference, we had no idea that it would be the first report of a long string of events leading to a proposal to institute the death penalty for LGBT people. Paul Cameron’s World

In 2005, the Southern Poverty Law Center wrote that “[Paul] Cameron’s ‘science’ echoes Nazi Germany.” What the SPLC didn”t know was Cameron doesn’t just “echo” Nazi Germany. He quoted extensively from one of the Final Solution’s architects. This puts his fascination with quarantines, mandatory tattoos, and extermination being a “plausible idea” in a whole new and deeply disturbing light.
