Uruguay votes on marriage today

Timothy Kincaid

December 11th, 2012

The Chamber of Deputies, the lower house of Uruguay’s legislature, is slated to vote on marriage equality today. The bill is expected to pass and we’ll notify you when we know more.

The bill passed, with 81 votes out of 87 legislators present. The bill will pass to the Senate early next year and will pass much as it did today. Uruguay’s governing coalition of parties prides itself on the fact that the country’s social policy is the “most progressive in the world.”

The law includes broader changes to family policies. The most controversial of other proposed changes includes letting all couples choose the order of the last names they give their children, a symbolic rupture in a Hispanic patriarcal tradition that is unparalleled, even in other countries that have approved same-sex marriage. In Spain, Argentina and Mexico, names of the children of same-sex couples must appear in alphabetical order, heterosexual couples’ children must have the father’s name first, followed by the mother’s name.
