Ireland moves towards equality

Timothy Kincaid

For years, Ireland’s politicians have said, “I support gay marriage, truly I do, but the constitution won’t let me vote for equality.”

That’s changing: (CS Monitor)

Ireland’s Constitutional Convention, a body set up by the government to propose wide-ranging changes to Ireland’s Constitution, voted Sunday, with 79 percent in favor of extending marriage rights to same sex couples.

The next step is likely a referendum. The Irish, living in a good Catholic country, overwhelmingly support equality.

It’s interesting how many historically Catholic countries have recognized same-sex marriage — Uruguay, Argentina, parts of Brazil, Mexico, Belgium, and now France and Ireland.

One wonders.

It’s no wonder I love so many Catholics (and recovering Catholics). Whereas multitudes of Protestant Evangelicals follow in lockstep behind their authoritarian charismatic Bible-hugging entrepreneurial leaders, multitudes of Catholics just want everyone to have satisfying lives, and are willing to reject the mumblings from the uninspiring “leaders” hired by the Vatican.

that is truly something.
if they truly are mostly catholics… how do they reconcile their god given head of the church’s views about what god says with this. I also live in an overwhelmingly catholic country(about 70%) and I find it quite hard to believe this amount of support for this. Unless the catholic church is delivering different sermons between countries, its quite astounding to see this 79% even if it’s just from a small group.
