Hawaii makes 16

Timothy Kincaid

November 7th, 2013

After days of testimony and hours of slapping down amendments designed to derail the legislation, the Hawaii House of Representatives has voted.

And finally the second (and most important) vote has passed marriage equality.

There is the formality of the third vote and gubernatorial signatures to come, but tonight Hawaii became state number 16

The celebration is a bit premature. This vote was a second reading where amendments are formally adopted on the House floor. Despite all of the drama this time, second readings are normally pro-forma. The most important vote is the final one on Friday.

The bill then goes back to the Senate for a concurrence vote. There was some concern expressed earlier this week that the Senate may balk at the House’s changes, but I haven’t seen them expressed lately.

Don’t celebrate until after the Governor signs the bill.

Aren’t these multiple readings/votes just an opportunity for legislators to vote out of both sides of their mouths? If the bill passes on Friday I expect the margin to be closer. Then, some legislators can say, “I would really like to vote for this same SEX marriage bill, but gosh-darn-it, you can never have too many special protections for religious beliefs, and this bill falls far short. As my constituents know, I’m all about inclusiveness, and every day I try my best to hug a homo.”

Jim, you are correctly cautious, but after the five days of testimony and that sickening, over-the-top, repulsive, brain-damaged onslaught by the opposition last night, there’s no way that bill is going to fail. The line was DRAWN in that debate. I just want to say that after the withering bigotry mounted by the mostly Democrat opposition, Hawaii’s reputation has made a permanent negative impression on me. That crowd takes no back seat Alabama.

I really have to applaud the 30 Representatives who stood up to that sick, hateful attack. They have cojones, believe me!
