Huh?

I’ve been surveying the anti-gay reaction to the epic crash-and-burn of Arizona’s religious freedom law. I can sum it up like this:

The bill failed because liberals lied about it: This bill was needed to make sure Christian bakers wouldn’t have to sell wedding cakes to same-sex couples, but it wouldn’t have given anyone the right to discriminate against gays and lesbians.

Also,

Laws forbidding discrimination against gays are wrong because they violate the Constitutionally-guaranteed right to freedom of association, but laws forbidding racial discrimination are fine because GAAAAAAY.

And they wonder why they keep losing.

It’s just too hard, whine the supporters of these discrimination-via-liberty bills, for business people to operate competently.

Too bad, responded competent business leaders. Not only is discriminating bad for the state and individual businesses, laws that give our employees a blank check to walk away from customers are much worse.

Rob, just watch Fox News 24/7 for a couple of weeks and all of the craziness will start making complete sense to you. I’ve actually seen seen it happen to intelligent, well educated, formerly sane people.

You’re allowed to discriminate against a damned class of people. Invoking religion is like the silver bullet/wooden stake.

The theological rationalisation for racial segregation has dried up. Racial minorities have been redeemed, no longer beasts of the forest. They can be killed with regular ordinary profane bullets, which makes shooting them wrong.

We gays are still susceptible to holy water and warding off with crosses so we have to take our chances. Woe unto us should we engage with the good godly folk.

Those supporting this draconian legislation thought the language would pass scrutiny because, surely, everyone – especially Republican business owners – would agree that Teh Geys are a subhuman, unrepentant, damned people, and thus not worthy of basic human decency or Christian compassion. The only possible way anyone could not grasp the obviousness of this is because:

1) Everyone misread the simple language of the bill which was, after all, written by God, just like the Ten Commandments;

2) No one would ever have abused these protections to discriminate against REAL people, everybody knows that; and

3) Teh Geys have poisoned everyone’s mind against We Poor Christians who are the ONLY people really discriminated against – EVER – this veto of what God Himself wrote proves this.

This is what happens when you only talk to your own reflection.

Slouching Towards Kampala: Uganda’s Deadly Embrace of Hate

When we first reported on three American anti-gay activists traveling to Kampala for a three-day conference, we had no idea that it would be the first report of a long string of events leading to a proposal to institute the death penalty for LGBT people. But that is exactly what happened. In this report, we review our collection of more than 500 posts to tell the story of one nation’s embrace of hatred toward gay people. This report will be updated continuously as events continue to unfold. Check here for the latest updates.

Paul Cameron’s World

In 2005, the Southern Poverty Law Center wrote that “[Paul] Cameron’s ‘science’ echoes Nazi Germany.” What the SPLC didn”t know was Cameron doesn’t just “echo” Nazi Germany. He quoted extensively from one of the Final Solution’s architects. This puts his fascination with quarantines, mandatory tattoos, and extermination being a “plausible idea” in a whole new and deeply disturbing light.

From the Inside: Focus on the Family’s “Love Won Out”

On February 10, I attended an all-day “Love Won Out” ex-gay conference in Phoenix, put on by Focus on the Family and Exodus International. In this series of reports, I talk about what I learned there: the people who go to these conferences, the things that they hear, and what this all means for them, their families and for the rest of us.

Daniel Fetty Doesn’t Count

Daniel FettyThe FBI’s annual Hate Crime Statistics aren’t as complete as they ought to be, and their report for 2004 was no exception. In fact, their most recent report has quite a few glaring holes. Holes big enough for Daniel Fetty to fall through.
