We Had Issues

Jim Burroway

July 13th, 2014

We're BackFor those of you just tuning in, our database server crashed Friday night, taking the entire site down for several hours. The host provider was able to get the site back up and running on a database backup taken very early Thursday morning, but that meant that we lost everything — posts and comments — from Thursday morning through Friday.

As of Saturday night, our host provider was able to get the database server back and running with, in their words, “all new parts.” It is now working off of the same database that was operating as of the moment the server crashed. Regular programming will resume soon.

Glad you’re back, because this is the site I would look to for a cogent and realistic discussion of the spat between Regnerus and the Aussie researchers. How valid are Regnerus’s complaints? Is the Aussie study “suspect science,” as he says, or do scientists understand the limitations inherent in the sort of sample the Aussie authors use and weigh their reliance on the results appropriately?

Is anything in the Aussie study as outrageous as Regnerus’s decision to classify any parent who had had a same-sex encounter during the child’s youth and adolescence that the child had become aware of as a “same-sex” parent and compare them only with stable heterosexual parents (as opposed to comparing them with parents who had had a heterosexual affair that the child was aware of)?

And thanks again for all y’all do.

Yes, if I had time I would have liked to address that.

Short version: the Aussie study was not conclusive but, unlike Regnerus, not intentionally deceptive.
