The Best Line In All of Legaldom

The Ninth Circuit’s ruling (PDF: 238 KB/43 pages) that struck down marriage bans in Idaho and Nevada included this gem on page 21:

Same-sex marriage, Governor Otter asserts, is part of a shift towards a consent-based, personal relationship model of marriage, which is more adultcentric and less child-centric.12

No, that sentence isn’t it. It’s that tiny little 12 at the end of it, referring to the best damn footnote in all of legaldom:

12 He also states, in conclusory fashion, that allowing same-sex marriage will lead opposite-sex couples to abuse alcohol and drugs, engage in extramarital affairs, take on demanding work schedules, and participate in time-consuming hobbies. We seriously doubt that allowing committed same-sex couples to settle down in legally recognized marriages will drive opposite-sex couples to sex, drugs, and rock-and-roll.

Well, I think a far better line is “These are not the arguments of serious people.”

I sincerely hope he is wrong about this. My work schedule is already as demanding as I can cope with, as is my husbands. I don’t have time for any more hobbies, I don’t drink or do drugs and I don’t want to have an affair. Good lord. The fact that more of my gay friends can now get married changes this how???????

That is one impressive load of crap.

Somehow, Gov. Otter’s (1950s) treatise against no-fault divorce fell into his statement on Marriage Equality.

Didn’t Footloose take place in Idhao???

And here I thought opposite couples had been doing that stuff all along.

I’ve always assumed that the main force helping to “drive opposite-sex couples to sex, drugs, and rock-and-roll” has been the acceptance of so many priests and pastors as role-models. Kudos to the judge for not allowing same-sex marriage to be the scapegoat.

“Same-sex marriage, Governor Otter asserts, is part of a shift towards a consent-based, personal relationship model of marriage, which is more adultcentric and less child-centric.”

As opposed to traditional opposite-gender marriage in which one man and one woman are compelled against their will by the state marriage matching agency to marry one another even though they do not like each other personally. And, of course, no one is better prepared to raise children than people who aren’t adults.

This comes from a divorced and remarried Roman Catholic.

Did he seriously argue that marriage equality will cause straights to “take on demanding work schedules, and participate in time-consuming hobbies”? Has he not noticed that many people are already working two or three jobs just to live?

@Matt actually it takes place in UT, 1984 version, and the 2011 version takes place in Georgia. Interestingly the movie is apparently based on real events that happened in Oklahoma.

How could anyone higher than a Neanderthal on the evolution scale come to such a totally absurd conclusion. There is absolutely no logic to this statement.

If these are the best arguments that you can present against gay marriage, then why bother making them public so that everyone can see that you’re a fool…..? (and he’s a governor!!!)

Slouching Towards Kampala: Uganda’s Deadly Embrace of Hate

When we first reported on three American anti-gay activists traveling to Kampala for a three-day conference, we had no idea that it would be the first report of a long string of events leading to a proposal to institute the death penalty for LGBT people. But that is exactly what happened. In this report, we review our collection of more than 500 posts to tell the story of one nation’s embrace of hatred toward gay people. Paul Cameron’s World

In 2005, the Southern Poverty Law Center wrote that “[Paul] Cameron’s ‘science’ echoes Nazi Germany.” What the SPLC didn”t know was Cameron doesn’t just “echo” Nazi Germany. He quoted extensively from one of the Final Solution’s architects. This puts his fascination with quarantines, mandatory tattoos, and extermination being a “plausible idea” in a whole new and deeply disturbing light.

On February 10, I attended an all-day “Love Won Out” ex-gay conference in Phoenix, put on by Focus on the Family and Exodus International.
