National Organization for Marriage’s new facebook site, Protect Marriage: One Man, One Woman, has an interesting new message:

Mike, in part I agree with you. It will cost a lot of money to fight this fight. However, no one is taking rights away from homosexuals. They are wanting rights that heterosexuals don’t have. There are no laws provided to heterosexuals based on their sexuality.
Next, they are “first-class citizens” like the rest of us. They are not being repressed, discriminated against. There is no and never has ever been a homosexual man hunt for them. Jews, Christians, and Blacks were hunted down and murdered. Homosexuals have nothing in common with the three.
Are they completely delusional?

In 2005, the Southern Poverty Law Center wrote that “[Paul] Cameron’s ‘science’ echoes Nazi Germany.” What the SPLC didn”t know was Cameron doesn’t just “echo” Nazi Germany. I think they have completely lost it. To say that there has “never has ever been a homosexual man hunt for them.” and that “Jews, Christians, and Blacks were hunted down and murdered. Homosexuals have nothing in common with the three.” are so obviously complete lies without any basis whatsoever in history has to be a sign that they are just on furlough from the mental institute. It takes a really psychotic person to make up such lies and then believe them.

I suspect they’ve realized that the “tolerant” image they had before didn’t really appeal to as many people as they’d gain by engaging in the…more forward anti-gay rhetoric.
Or they wouldn’t lose that many people to their cause by being more forward (i.e., how many parents fearing their child being taught about gay marriage aren’t prejudiced against gays to begin with?).

I’d add it doesn’t really matter if they are delusional…they people to whom they appeal are ready and willing to believe these claims. We can point out the intellectual dishonesty of these statement and press releases, but NOM’s supporters don’t really give a damn if gays are good people or contributing to society.
Gays’re bad…that’s all they need to encourage.

Paul, don’t have their Facebook page pulled. That just gives them more ammunition to say how we’re the ones who are really intolerant.
The people who go to their Facebook page (besides those of those who like to see the train wreck) also read their blog. They do so because this group encourages them in their existing beliefs. David is correct, these folks will find the information that supports their hate, and having their Facebook page pulled just gives them more reason to hate gay people. It won’t make anyone more tolerant.
In fact, I think they are pushing the hysteria envelope to get more money coming in, and it will work. But I think that in the process, people who might be on the fence will see their extremism, and disassociate. People who are already strong haters will continue to hate us and support NOM no matter what. You have to get to people face-to-face, and have a calm discussion with them, and work to show them that we’re not hydra headed beasts. That’s about all that works.

I think this NOM message is tailored to the youth on facebook who may not be aware of human history. NOM is probably trying to tap into those young people’s prejudices and sign them up for their movement. No well-educated adult with an open mind would take this NOM message at face value, but a teenager or young adult that doesn’t know history likely would buy into this stuff.

Nice. And I’m reading all this on Facebook, right above a post from The Advocate about that couple who were beaten in Staten Island recently. At some point, I fully expect to see these gutter crawling bigots just admit outright that violence is merely our due. Orson Scott Card, who is a NOM board member, is on record as saying the laws against sodomy are there not so much to lock us all up as to suppress homosexual behavior. Well I suppose violence does that too doesn’t it? At some point they’re just going to come right out and say that a fearful homosexual is a good homosexual.

We need to knock down the oft repeated rhetoric: “Special Rights” and ask people to show where we are asking for something special.

When gays are allowed to marry heterosexuals will also have the right to a same sex marriage so gays won’t have any rights that heterosexuals don’t.

Are there some extra rights that we are fighting for that I’m not aware of? I was under the impression that all we were asking for were the same rights that heterosexuals already have. And can you name anyone who has been straight bashed? I can name Mathew Shephard, Laurence King, and someone with the last name Aroro I think who was transgendered. What’s especially stupid about the Special Rights argument is that allowing marriage equality expands civil rights for *each and every* person living in that jurisdiction.
With marriage equality, instead of being required to marry a person of the opposite sex, straight people have the option (which no doubt they will choose not to exercise) to marry someone of the same sex.
Just because a person doesn’t want access to a right doesn’t mean, a) it’s a bad right or, b) that he has to take advantage of it. Look at smoking and gun ownership – two rights that a lot of people don’t take advantage of, but the people who do partake will scream bloody murder if you try to remove them.
