Mayor Jim Naugle has been on a campaign to demonize gay folk and make them unwelcome in his city. His interview with Bill O’Reilly made that clear to anyone who still harbored doubts: O’REILLY: All right. Now there is a large gay community in Fort Lauderdale and a large gay tourism industry there, as well. […]

In September of last year, Alan Chambers was the principle author (with four other Exodus employees) of a book titled God’s Grace and the Homosexual Next Door. On page 115, Mike Goeke offered the following advice: Stand up for gay people. The church and conservative Christianity hasn’t been a safe, welcoming place for homosexuals. Oftentimes […]

Mayor Jim Naugle is on a crusade to defend Ft. Lauderdale’s morals. First he wanted an automatic toilet to stop gay men from having sex. Then he declared that gay people are unhappy. Next he tried to block a collection of gay themed material from being housed in a city owned building. Finally, he staged […]

Ex-Gay Watch has more information about the hetertofore secret Exodus study being conducted by Stanton Jones out of Wheaton College. Known as the Thomas Project, the study appears to be small (around 100 people), and consisting of a simple telephone interview. Unknowns include recruitment methods, employment or ministerial status of study participants, or the interview […]

At the height of the AIDS crisis, on December 10, 1989, several dozen activists from ACT-UP violated the sanctity of St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York to protest Cardinal O’Connor’s policies and activism about AIDS, particularly his opposition to the distribution of condoms. They threw condoms at the altar and chained themselves to pews. This […]

See Update below A “pro-family” crowd is gathering in Florida next month at something called the Family Impact Summit to “inform and empower involved Christian citizenship”. They’ll be talking about religious freedom, racial reconciliation, global warming (is it global whining?), and life issues. Oh yes, and homosexuality. Lots and lots and lots and LOTS of […]

Don Frankenfeld, a former Republican state legislator, wrote an article discussing why he decided to join Equality South Dakota. Frankenfeld uses humor to reach both gay people and Republicans in South Dakota, whom he believes need each other. The following candid remarks of his amused me, so I’m sharing them with you: The fact is […]

Last June, we reported on three former Exodus and Exodus-affiliated leaders who apologized for their parts “in the message of broken truth we spoke on behalf of Exodus and other organizations.” Today, Beyond Ex-Gay and Soulforce have announced that three former Australian Ex-Gay leaders have issued statements of apology for their roles in ex-gay ministries.

Republican Presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani has had a historically supportive relationship with the gay community. This has been evident not only in his mayoral politics but also within his activism within the Republican Party. There is some criticism now that claims that Giuliani is sacrificing his moderate positions to appeal to more conservative elements within […]

When the Soprannos character Vito Spatafore was revealed to be a gay mobster, it represented a surprising and poignant turning point in the show. And the Sopranos remained true to its gritty and violent nature by having him whacked. In a brutal scene, Vito (played by Joseph R. Gannascoli) was beaten to death and sodomized […]

A recent opinion poll in Russia said that only 9% disagreed with Moscow mayor Yuri Luzhkov’s ban of the gay pride march last year. With rising nationalism in Russia, the nascent gay rights movement is often branded as a dangerous foreign influence. Against that backdrop, the Washington Post reported last weekend on the divide in […]

Patrick Atkins knew that his family was judgmental and unaccepting. And he knew that after 25 years together, Brett Conrad was the person he trusted to love, honor and cherish him. But he did not know that he would suffer a ruptured aneurysm on a business trip which would leave him mentally impaired at the […]

A commenter identifying himself as Paul Wagner, Cecil Sinclair’s partner, left a comment with more details concerning High Point Church’s refusal to host Cecil’s funeral. Because of the details he provided, and the fact that his email address and ISP identify his location as being in Texas, I’m inclined to believe it’s the real thing. […]

The internet is a buzz. On last night’s Democratic forum sponsored by the Human Rights Campaign and broadcast on LOGO, Melissa Etheridge asked New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson whether he thought people were born gay or if it was a choice. He answered, “It’s a choice.” She rephrased the question, thinking Richardson misunderstood her, but […]

The current issue of The Onion satire newspaper features the headline “Small Town Holds Annual Gay Shame Parade” accompanied by this image: While The Onion clearly intends for the idea of shaming gay people to be satire Peter LaBarbera has increasingly been using the term in all seriousness. Here’s a Google inventory of LaBarbera’s use […]

In this original BTB Investigation, we unveil the tragic story of Kirk Murphy, a four-year-old boy who was treated for “cross-gender disturbance” in 1970 by a young grad student by the name of George Rekers. This story is a stark reminder that there are severe and damaging consequences when therapists try to ensure that boys will be boys.
When we first reported on three American anti-gay activists traveling to Kampala for a three-day conference, we had no idea that it would be the first report of a long string of events leading to a proposal to institute the death penalty for LGBT people. But that is exactly what happened. In this report, we review our collection of more than 500 posts to tell the story of one nation’s embrace of hatred toward gay people. This report will be updated continuously as events continue to unfold. Check here for the latest updates.
In 2005, the Southern Poverty Law Center wrote that “[Paul] Cameron’s ‘science’ echoes Nazi Germany.” What the SPLC didn”t know was Cameron doesn’t just “echo” Nazi Germany. He quoted extensively from one of the Final Solution’s architects. This puts his fascination with quarantines, mandatory tattoos, and extermination being a “plausible idea” in a whole new and deeply disturbing light.
On February 10, I attended an all-day “Love Won Out” ex-gay conference in Phoenix, put on by Focus on the Family and Exodus International. In this series of reports, I talk about what I learned there: the people who go to these conferences, the things that they hear, and what this all means for them, their families and for the rest of us.

Anti-gay activists often charge that gay men and women pose a threat to children. In this report, we explore the supposed connection between homosexuality and child sexual abuse, the conclusions reached by the most knowledgeable professionals in the field, and how anti-gay activists continue to ignore their findings. This has tremendous consequences, not just for gay men and women, but more importantly for the safety of all our children.
Anti-gay activists often cite the “Dutch Study” to claim that gay unions last only about 1½ years and that the these men have an average of eight additional partners per year outside of their steady relationship. In this report, we will take you step by step into the study to see whether the claims are true.
Tony Perkins’ Family Research Council submitted an Amicus Brief to the Maryland Court of Appeals as that court prepared to consider the issue of gay marriage. We examine just one small section of that brief to reveal the junk science and fraudulent claims of the Family “Research” Council.
The FBI’s annual Hate Crime Statistics aren’t as complete as they ought to be, and their report for 2004 was no exception. In fact, their most recent report has quite a few glaring holes. Holes big enough for Daniel Fetty to fall through.
