Ed Brayton, at Dispatches from the Culture Wars, passes on this report from UPI (a report that is no longer available at the UPI web site): The Anglican Bishop of Uyo, Rt. Rev. Isaac Orama, has condemned the activities of homosexuals and lesbians, and described those engaged in them as “insane people”. “It is scaring […]

In 2005 the California legislature passed a bill removing the requirement that marriage only be recognized between persons of the opposite sex. The bill was vetoed by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. Although some activists accused the Governor of appeasing anti-gay factions within his party, I found his arguments to have some merit. The Governor pointed to […]

This post has been revised to add information on Kennedy’s ties to the Christian Reconstructionist movement, and to include Wayne Besen’s reaction. Rev. D. James Kennedy, pastor of the Fort Lauderdale megachurch, Coral Ridge Ministries, died this morning. He was 76. Kennedy was one of the more notorious, rabidly anti-gay extremists in America. And in […]

It’s a ‘chicken or the egg’ question; what comes first, anti-gay extremism or a child’s sexual orientation? It seems almost more than coincidental that there are so many anti-gay activists with gay children ranging from Eagle Forum’s Phyllis Schafly and Operation Rescue’s Randall Terry to ex-gay proponants like PFOX’s Regina Griggs and NARTH’s Charles Socarides. […]

That’s the title of a column in Newsweek by Loraine Barr who at 88 decided that it was finally time to publicly acknowledge the truth of her 44-year relationship: Finally, after almost nine years since my beloved partner’s death, I am able to do what I could never have braved in earlier years: present myself […]

Idaho Sen. Larry Craig’s arrest and subsequent guilty plea for soliciting sex in a Minneapolis airport public restroom continues to dominate the airwaves and the blogosphere. As the discussions and reactions continue to unfold, I’ve noticed a very significant double standard taking shape. Now I know that a few in the gay community want to […]

Amidst discussion about Sen. Craig’s bathroom antics, MSNBC’s conservative commentator Tucker Carlson shared a story from his youth: CARLSON: … Having sex in a public men’s room is outrageous. It’s also really common. I’ve been bothered in men’s rooms. I think people who do – SCARBOROUGH: Really? CARLSON: Yeah, I have. You know what, Let […]

Last November Timothy Kincaid reported at Ex-Gay Watch that Greg Quinlan planned on taking his ex-gay and anti-gay political message to the churches of New Jersey. PressOfAtlanticCity.com reports Quinlan will take his message to Cumberland County Community Church this weekend. Since the Ex-Gay Survivor’s Movement has begun there has been a sea-change in how ex-gay […]

Generally we find that when a public figure is caught in a scandal, political and religious leaders tend express their disappointment but also find a way to display compassion and sorrow (especially with those of the same party). Phrases like “sympathy for the family”, “hope for recovery”, or “this time of difficulty” tend to abound. Not so with presidential […]

It’s story that keeps getting more incredible with each passing day. First, Ted Haggard sends out a fundraising letter, asking for financial support while he and his family move into the Phoenix Dream Center’s halfway house to minister to ex-cons, recovering alcoholics, drug addicts, prostitutes, and “other broken people.” Except his fundraising letter suggests that […]

The Mayor of Ft. Lauderdale is concerned about a “health crisis” of sex in public bathrooms (eight arrests in two years within the county). And he brought in the parade of anti-gay crusaders to decry the evils of the “homosexual lifestyle”. But just what is the lifestyle of those who are caught doing the nasty […]

Last Thursday, BTB’s Daniel Gonzales told you about Ted Haggard’s fundraising letter, where he asked his supporters to help defray his living expenses as he takes up residence at a halfway house for ex-cons, recovering alcoholics, drug addicts, prostitutes, and “other broken people.” According to Haggard’s letter, concerned supports can send their donations directly to […]

First I’ll give you a tidbit on Mike Jones who was last spotted in Denver’s independent weekly, Westword, leading absolutely filthy bar trivia. As for Ted, although he seems to have been cured of his homosexuality in three weeks, we haven’t heard much on the crystal meth front — which is why it’s comic that: […]

One of the most often heard (and most ignorant) arguments against recognition of same-sex couples is that marriage has always been the same – one man and one woman – for 5,000 years. Considering that the same people who assert this position also claim they read the Bible, I marvel that they don’t break out […]

American Idol contestant Mandisa was voted off the show following concerns that she was anti-gay and supported ex-gay ministries. The bruhaha came after she announced on the show that if you want to be free, God’s bigger than your lifestyle and listed as her personal idol a woman who advocates reorientation therapy. Mandisa, it seems, […]

In this original BTB Investigation, we unveil the tragic story of Kirk Murphy, a four-year-old boy who was treated for “cross-gender disturbance” in 1970 by a young grad student by the name of George Rekers. This story is a stark reminder that there are severe and damaging consequences when therapists try to ensure that boys will be boys.
When we first reported on three American anti-gay activists traveling to Kampala for a three-day conference, we had no idea that it would be the first report of a long string of events leading to a proposal to institute the death penalty for LGBT people. But that is exactly what happened. In this report, we review our collection of more than 500 posts to tell the story of one nation’s embrace of hatred toward gay people. This report will be updated continuously as events continue to unfold. Check here for the latest updates.
In 2005, the Southern Poverty Law Center wrote that “[Paul] Cameron’s ‘science’ echoes Nazi Germany.” What the SPLC didn”t know was Cameron doesn’t just “echo” Nazi Germany. He quoted extensively from one of the Final Solution’s architects. This puts his fascination with quarantines, mandatory tattoos, and extermination being a “plausible idea” in a whole new and deeply disturbing light.
On February 10, I attended an all-day “Love Won Out” ex-gay conference in Phoenix, put on by Focus on the Family and Exodus International. In this series of reports, I talk about what I learned there: the people who go to these conferences, the things that they hear, and what this all means for them, their families and for the rest of us.

Anti-gay activists often charge that gay men and women pose a threat to children. In this report, we explore the supposed connection between homosexuality and child sexual abuse, the conclusions reached by the most knowledgeable professionals in the field, and how anti-gay activists continue to ignore their findings. This has tremendous consequences, not just for gay men and women, but more importantly for the safety of all our children.
Anti-gay activists often cite the “Dutch Study” to claim that gay unions last only about 1½ years and that the these men have an average of eight additional partners per year outside of their steady relationship. In this report, we will take you step by step into the study to see whether the claims are true.
Tony Perkins’ Family Research Council submitted an Amicus Brief to the Maryland Court of Appeals as that court prepared to consider the issue of gay marriage. We examine just one small section of that brief to reveal the junk science and fraudulent claims of the Family “Research” Council.
The FBI’s annual Hate Crime Statistics aren’t as complete as they ought to be, and their report for 2004 was no exception. In fact, their most recent report has quite a few glaring holes. Holes big enough for Daniel Fetty to fall through.
