NARTH Scientific Advisory Committee member Joseph Berger said on a blog in reaction to a San Francisco Chronicle article on gender identity issues, “I suggest, indeed, letting children who wish go to school in clothes of the opposite sex – but not counselling other children to not tease them or hurt their feelings. On the contrary, don’t interfere, and let the other children ridicule the child who has lost that clear boundary between play-acting at home and the reality needs of the outside world.”

In all of the claims and spins surrounding battling statements between the APA and NARTH concerning conversion therapy, NARTH has been strangely silent over the issue of Informed Consent. And for good reason. They are in violation of the APA’s policy statememnt for treating those who are unhappy with their sexual orientation.

Two recent articles in the Washington Post led me to compare Virginia in 2006 to the Deep South in 1956. A couple of parallels are striking. It appears we are seeing examples of some rather frightening attacks against a hated minority, a minority whose rights are persistently and severely hampered by that state’s legal strictures. And we are seeing a migration of that minority to safer locales.

Joe Brummer stays on Guy Adams’ case (of “gays having sex with infants” fame). Read this series of emails and you can see the kind of truly unhinged people we’re dealing with. Good work, Joe. With the spate of hate crimes this week, Mike Ditto at Janus Online tipped me to another one Wednesday of […]

Anti-gay activists often say that gay people are prone to depression. With news like this, is it any wonder? San Diego again. A security guard was attacked by about fifteen teenagers who shouted anti-gay epithets at him. They scattered when police arrived, but three were later arrested when they tried to attack him again. Meanwhile […]

Columnist Dan Savage has an excellent op-ed piece in last Sunday’s New York Times about the recent rulings on same-sex marriage in New York and Washington. He believes that both courts’ reliance on arguments about procreation is the key to turning these setbacks into future victories.

Or at the least, revenge. But that’s only because of the US military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy. A decorated sergeant and Arabic language specialist Bleu Copas was dismissed from the Army, even though he never was asked, and never told. His accuser has not been identified. Instead, the Army relied on a stream of anonymous e-mails sent to his superiors.

The Advocate has a heartbreaking story by David Luc Nguyen, a former “ex-gay” (an “ex-ex-gay,” you might say) who emerged from a very difficult attempt to go straight. He was forced by his parents to undergo counseling after he came out to them. When he finally dropped out of Portland Fellowship, an Exodus affiliate where he underwent counseling, his parents kicked him out. Many of the damaging aspects ex-gay ministries comes from the fact that they are not certified competent counselors…

When we first reported on three American anti-gay activists traveling to Kampala for a three-day conference, we had no idea that it would be the first report of a long string of events leading to a proposal to institute the death penalty for LGBT people. But that is exactly what happened. In this report, we review our collection of more than 500 posts to tell the story of one nation’s embrace of hatred toward gay people. In 2005, the Southern Poverty Law Center wrote that “[Paul] Cameron’s ‘science’ echoes Nazi Germany.” What the SPLC didn”t know was Cameron doesn’t just “echo” Nazi Germany. He quoted extensively from one of the Final Solution’s architects. This puts his fascination with quarantines, mandatory tattoos, and extermination being a “plausible idea” in a whole new and deeply disturbing light.
On February 10, I attended an all-day “Love Won Out” ex-gay conference in Phoenix, put on by Focus on the Family and Exodus International. The FBI’s annual Hate Crime Statistics aren’t as complete as they ought to be, and their report for 2004 was no exception. In fact, their most recent report has quite a few glaring holes. Holes big enough for Daniel Fetty to fall through.
