Haggard Resigns; “I Know What You Did Last Night”

Jim Burroway

November 4th, 2006

This just appeared on the USA Today website:

The Rev. Ted Haggard agreed to resign as leader of the New Life Church after its independent investigative board recommended removal, saying he was guilty “of sexually immoral conduct.”

“We, the Overseer Board of New Life Church, have concluded our deliberations concerning the moral failings of Pastor Ted Haggard,” a statement from the church said. “Our investigation and Pastor Haggard’s public statements have proven without a doubt that he has committed sexually immoral conduct.”

Up until now, the only thing that Haggard admitted to was buying methamphetamine. When it came to the sex allegations, he paraphrased former President Clinton in saying, “I did not have a homosexual affair with a man in Denver.”

But the investigative board at New Life Church saw things differently and concluded that “without a doubt” he did have sex with that man. Did Haggard admit to something to the board that he hasn’t revealed publicly? Or did they simply conclude the obvious based on the evidence so far?

Meanwhile, Time offers this fascinating glimpse from the documentary Jesus Camp, a film about the religious training of children in Pentecostal seminars:

In it, he [Rev. Haggard] is seen telling a crowd, “We don’t have to have a debate about what we think about homosexual activity. It’s written in the Bible.” Shortly after that, Haggard looks mockingly into the camera to say, “I think I know what you did last night. If you send me a thousand dollars, I won’t tell your wife.” The crowd responds with peals of laughter. Then he says with a wide smile, “If you use any of this, I’ll sue you.”

Freud would have had a field day with this.
