Ditch the Coasts

Jim Burroway

April 9th, 2008

Looking for a gay-friendly city? According to the Advocate’s April 8 issue, you should consider abandoning the coasts in favor of cities like Ft .Worth, Ft. Wayne, Anchorage, Jacksonville or Tulsa. Tulsa you say?

Tulsa, Oklahoma: diversity, lots of museums and theaters, tasty foodie scene, and a low cost of living with “big-city benefits,” says one resident.

Over to you, Sally Kern.

Seriously? Having lived in Ft. Wayne, I disagree. I found there to be very few other open gay men to meet there and it’s just not a very pleasant city overall. And the city water is disgusting.

Except that Sally isn’t from Tulsa and doesn’t represent the prevailing, progressive culture there.

Oklahoma has two signficant cities with very different cultral ethos: Oklahoma City and Tulsa. Tulsa has consistently been the more artsy and progressive city of the two.

When Lynn Johnston, writer of the For Better or for Worse strips, did her “Lawrence Coming Out” series, the “Daily Oklahoman” (OKC’s major paper) dropped the strip; the “Tulsa World” kept running it. That’s just one indication of the difference between the cities.

That said, Oklahoma as a state is definitely not gay-friendly as evidenced by the legislation in force.
