Anti-Christian Bigotry

Timothy Kincaid

Today I ran across some anti-Christian bigotry of a particularly nasty sort. As I was recently accused by Peter LaBarbera of being an anti-Christian bigot, this caught my attention.

I’m including a selection here. I hope no one is offended as it is pretty hateful and vile.

yet another connection between the United Church of Christ (UCC) and perversion.

We hear that the UCC is still searching for a partnering church that cater to swingers.

For the sake of accuracy, we also recommend a name-change to UCS: United Church of Sodom.

Enough with this phony “Christ” talk.

We envision a host of liberal Protestant mergers under the UCS banner beginning with proud homosexualist bishop (Vicky) Gene Robinson and his wayward Episcopal Church.

It’s been quite a while since I’ve seen such a venomous attack on Christianity and Christian churches. But, surprisingly it wasn’t atheists or agnostics that were spewing hate. It wasn’t Wiccans or Muslims or “homosexualist Jews“.

Nope, all this anti-Christian bigotry was brayed out by Peter LaBarbera. Ah Pete, it’s no wonder you didn’t accept our challenge to point out Box Turtle Bulletin’s bigotry. You forgot that it was you who wrote it on your own site.

As a life long member of the UCC, I am deeply offended by this bigotry. The United Church of Christ is the oldest protestant tradition in North America. We trace our roots back to the Pilgrims at Plymouth Rock. A majority of the signers of the Declaration of Independence were members of the UCC’s predecessor bodies. Fully 20% of our 5,700 congregation were formed before the American Revolution. The UCC is the MOST American church. It has PROFOUNDLY affected the development of American culture and political discourse.

And yet, I’m not particularly surprised that Mr. LaBarbara spews such hate. He has, after all, made an industry of it.

How sad.

I saw that and it was ugly. It only serves to reduce LaBarbera’s credibility.

Uhh… did anyone think to ask if the Church is trying to cater to swingers? I mean… like are we talking about swing dancing… or wife swappers?

This line of argument won’t work for people like him and his minions. They don’t consider the UCC and Episcopal Church to be “true” Christian churches. He’d probably label them pagan, Satanic or what-have-you.

“The United Church of Christ is the oldest protestant tradition in North America.”

You know they say if we don’t know history, we are doomed to repeat it. And that’s so true. The contributions of the UCC are ignored and the history of the Baptist church is ignored.

Growing up an American Baptist, I was taught how the Baptists were at the forefront of the movement to keep the church and state separate. How we had been persecuted in England and came to America to avoid that persecution. And so on. Yet today we see many Baptists leading the persecutions of gays and lesbians.

Thanks for continuing to shed light on the hypocrisy.

It is interesting that LaBarbera found it relevant to point out that Bishop Robinson’s first name is Vicky. What he overlooked by choice or ignorance is that the bishop’s middle name is actually Imogene. He was named after his father Victor and mother Imogene Robinson. At his birth, the doctor did not expect the baby to survive more than perhaps a few weeks or months at the most. The parents had wanted a daughter and decided to name him accordingly, since ‘he would not reach a significant age’. While ….. God (or whatever) fooled everybody. Gene has surpassed the age of 50 yrs, has a same-sex, lovingly, committed partner of about 20 yrs, a loving and supportive family and a church that has not only tolerated him, but endorsed him at every level (with noteable dissenting voices) to be a man of great and honorable Christian faith. And with regard to rename to “UCS”, does that mean a church family that is not hospitable to strangers??????

I am very offended by this as well! As a straight man who writes gay fiction – and lots of gay porn – I want to get my piece of LaBarbera’s insanity/publicity. Come on, Pete, step up to the damned plate already: we’re a match made in hell!!

I am a proud and active member of the UCC and I am VERY offended!

Just when you thought it was absolutely impossible to achieve, Peter LaBarbara has reached yet another new low!

What’s that sound? It’s Peter Labarbera munching on what there is of his own credibility. He does our work for us.

Slouching Towards Kampala: Uganda’s Deadly Embrace of Hate

When we first reported on three American anti-gay activists traveling to Kampala for a three-day conference, we had no idea that it would be the first report of a long string of events leading to a proposal to institute the death penalty for LGBT people. Paul Cameron’s World

In 2005, the Southern Poverty Law Center wrote that “[Paul] Cameron’s ‘science’ echoes Nazi Germany.” What the SPLC didn”t know was Cameron doesn’t just “echo” Nazi Germany. He quoted extensively from one of the Final Solution’s architects. This puts his fascination with quarantines, mandatory tattoos, and extermination being a “plausible idea” in a whole new and deeply disturbing light.
