A Few Silver Linings

Jim Burroway

November 5th, 2008

As we continue to watch California’s results trickle in, there are some silver linings to report. Arizona State Sen. Tim Bee (R-Tucson) lost his congressional race against Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, 55% to 43%, with 73% of precincts reporting. Bee is the guy responsible for casting the crucial sixteenth vote which put Prop 102 onto the Arizona ballot. His political career is now, fittingly, over.

And perennial Federal Marriage Amendment sponsor Marilyn Musgrave (R-CO) has lost her bid for re-election. With 67% of precincts reporting, Betsy Markey is thumping her 57% to 42%.

Update: With 99% of the precincts reported, Bee is down 56% to 43%. The Arizona Daily Star is reporting that Bee has still declined to concede as of 1:30 am. What a loser.

Update: After the lights went out and the cameras left, Bee finally conceded via email this morning.

Well, if Prop 8 does pass, and I seriously think it will at this point, the only consolation that I can see is that maybe now we can have a chance to get marriage back though another constitutional amendment. I know it’s not much of a consolation but I’m just too depressed to think about it otherwise.

Tremendous joy at Obama’s victory, and other gains around the country (including the ones noted in your post, which we appreciate your pointing out.)

Huge sadness, however, at the losses in FL, AK, AZ and (though hopefully not, but so far, it seems so…) CA. My friends have been consoling each other by keeping in mind the tremendous gains made by the LGBT rights movement over the past however many years, further than many of us ever imagined in so short a time (though those gains were still way overdue, but still…) along with the knowledge/expectation/hope that at some point in the future – perhaps sooner rather than later – justice will prevail.

Thanks for all you’ve added to the fight.

earlier comment had typo – “AK” should read “AR.”

And what happened to the rest of the legislators who got that mess on the ballot? I don’t need the fate of each one but a count would be nice.
