The Ugandan legislature is considering a bill that would enhance sentencing for gay people to include the death penalty for “repeat offenders”, among other “aggravated homosexuality” offenses, and life imprisonment for others. This bill, needless to say, is considered inhumane by most of the West and, indeed, anyone who cares about human right.
But rather than consider how their barbarism is viewed by the civilized world, Uganda’s political leadership thinks this reflects positively on them. (IPS)
But Uganda\’s ethics and integrity minister sees the uproar surrounding the Bill as a positive sign that Uganda is “providing leadership” to the world. The minister, James Nsaba Buturo, tells IPS he is happy the Bill is causing a lot of debate globally.
“It is with joy we see that everyone is interested in what Uganda is doing, and it is an opportunity for Uganda to provide leadership where it matters most. So we are here to see a piece of legislation that will not only define what the country stands for, but actually provide leadership around the world,” he says.

Anti-gay activists often charge that gay men and women pose a threat to children. Where it matters most? The family? the children? oh dear.. how naive(because neither suffer from it, and accepting it just makes the family more united and as for children, gay parents do just as well parenting), blind(because their high and mighty righteousness seems to overthrow empathy, reason or humanity;blinded by tradition and probably faith ) and just a plain silly remark as this is cannon fodder for gay activist vs christianity. Now they need to rely less on islam and its aggressive stance vs homosexuality. Now they can just quote their overly outspoken pastors, “… in the name of Jesus and extended ‘protect the family quotes'”.
Heartfelt ‘plz forgive them because they do not know what they are doing’
How long will it be till they start claiming that they have successfully rid their country of much of the imported homosexuality with this bill?

I’m reminded of medieval European travelers who looked upon the relative liberalism of the Muslim world and (especially) Asia with disgust, while Europe was trapped in poverty while the Muslim world and China were the wealthiest places on earth and responsible for most of the science and technology.
Europe saw itself as the pinnacle of civilization at that time, too.

David – Recent news indicates that China is ready to give Uganda $1 Billion in aid with no strings attached. That is more than several of the Western nations’ support combined. It would seem more prudent to continue aid and attempt to see that it goes where intended rather than cut off ordinary Ugandas who are in such desparate plight.

And my question would then be what is the Chinese aid intended to do for the Chinese? And is it really without strings?
I had already thought through the second theme in your remark before posting mine. Who are “ordinary Ugandans” if Uganda wants to “legalize” what is essentially a human rights violation? If the parliament is elected, should westernized societies be supporting people that would kill their neighbors for simply being who they are?
Uganda is a hard problem, and it’s been made even more difficult by some religious leaders.
