Your humble Grinch

Timothy Kincaid

December 21st, 2009

I have been nominated for an award. I am among a small selection of gay individuals for whom a unique recognition is being considered. By Peter LaBarbera.

lababs2LaBarbera, an anti-gay activist who runs the ironically named Americans for Truth About Homosexuality organization, has created the Gay Grinch of the Year award which he promises to “mak[e] light of the bald-faced hypocrisy of homosexual activists, who demand tolerance for themselves even as they maliciously attack and victimize their critics.” It is reserved for “the meanest, most deceitful, most socially destructive and/or most blasphemous “gay” activist of the year.”

The nominees are (drum roll please…)

  • Perez Hilton – for his vulgar, bigoted rant against Miss California Carrie Prejean during the Miss USA 2009 pageant
  • Wayne Besen — for his ongoing hatred and harassment of former homosexuals and Christians who help “gays” leave the lifestyle
  • Frank Kameny — for proclaiming that the God of the Bible is a “sinful homophobic bigot” who needs to repent
  • Rachel Maddow — for suggesting that rather than tossing two tomatoes at Sarah Palin, an activist in Minnesota should have thrown a pie at the former Alaska governor
  • ChadMichael Morrisette and Mito Aviles — for a parody at Halloween in which they propped up a nude female mannequin with “LIAR” written on the belly and a copy of the face of pro-traditional-marriage advocate Maggie Gallagher attached as the head
  • Timothy Kincaid — for preposterously accusing pro-family advocate Laurie Higgins of wanting to see students harmed
  • George Fornero — a superintendent of school District 113 in the northern suburbs of Chicago who wrote gossipy e-mails about the same Laurie Higgins

Me? Gosh, I hardly know what to say.

I suppose in fairness I should reveal that I didn’t actually say that Laurie Higgins wanted to see students harmed, something LaBarbera repeats several times in his interview with Concerned Women for America. What I said was that Higgins “believes it is a Christian kid\’s duty to bully his gay classmates” and later that Laurie “sees her goal as defending the culture of disapproval and condemnation.”

But, shhhhh, don’t tell The Peter.

I’m sure there are a great many reasons that LaBarbera could find for determining any of the authors at Box Turtle Bulletin to be the “meanest or most blasphemous gay activist”. But the selection of my criticism of Laurie Higgins is fitting. After all, we did award Higgins with the Peter LaBarbera Award for the “most outrageous, offensive, malevolent, crazy, or excessive statement or claim.” So, in a way, this closes the circle.

And I am proud that we exposed the extremism in Higgins’ writings. I am glad that we revealed that she expresses no concern whatsoever for the real and measurable harm resulting from her rhetoric and that she believes it the duty of Christian students to disregard the concerns of their gay schoolmates.

But I’m realistic.

How could I possibly win when the competition includes Perez Hilton, Wayne Besen, and Rachel Maddow? With such formidable competition, it seems unlikely that I have a even a small chance. Surely this is how Kathy Griffin felt when she learned was being considered for a comedy album Grammy, only to hear that she was up against the recently deceased George Carlin.

But with this year being the inaugural year I say, as countless awards nominees have said before me, it’s an honor just to be nominated.

UPDATE: Dan Savage has now been added as a nominee for past extremism and not seeming to comprehend the radical difference between evolving reforms within marriage and the revolutionary homosexualization of “marriage” that essentially redefines the institution to mean anything.

Whew, that’s quite an accomplishment. Now I have no chance whatsoever.

Timothy – It shows all of us who are avid followers of BTB that you and the other contributors are indeed on the right track, no I should say Correct track.

Congratulations!

He’ll probably give it to Wayne, though. He’s obsessed with Wayne.

I can’t say I’d argue with him if he picked Perez Hilton.

I’m wondering what style of statuette they will use when they give the award. A blending between an Oscar and a bowling trophy? Perhaps they have some Fickle Finger of Fate awards left over form Laugh In.

I’m surprised Joe Jervis didn’t get a nomination.

By the way, just so you know, despite whoever wins, I’m storming the stage and pulling a Kanye West cause Pam Spaulding didn’t get a nomination.

That’s pretty heady company, Timothy – congratulations! Like Ray, I’m a little surprised that Joe Jervis isn’t there – and Pam Spaulding is conspicuously absent, although La Barbera did proclaim her his “Favourite Lesbian Blog-stremist”.

Of course following such sterling performances from Glen Beck, Pope Ratty and David Bahati, La Barbera doesn’t stand a chance at winning the “Bigot of the Year” award. I doubt he’d even make the shortlist.

That’s a list of the the meanest, most deceitful, most socially destructive and/or most blasphemous he could come up with???

Oh, that’s right… it’s a list restricted to ‘gay activists’. Poor old PP: all he’s done is prove how comparatively mild gay activists actually are.

Timothy, if he sends you a statuette or something — don’t handle it with your bare hands. Just saying.

Wow – that really is some stiff competition. Congrats Timothy!

I’m surprised that someone Porno Pete met at the tubs on one of “research expeditions” did not make the cut.

I think Hilton will win in Porno Pete’s pathetic attempt to use his celebrity to gain media attention for his failed organization.

I must admit that I have cleared a space out on the shelf next to a dusty old bowling trophy in case I am the recipient of such an honor.

I just hope LaBarbera does not touch the dang thing, because I don’t trust where his hands have been.

“That’s a list of the the meanest, most deceitful, most socially destructive and/or most blasphemous he could come up with???”

I’m gonna say LaBarabara hasn’t encountered Dan Savage, either. Savage’s “Youth Minister Watch” and “Today In Traditional Marriage” features on his blog can be pretty wilting/satisfying.

If I hear one more straight white Christian man take the “victim” route just because someone disagrees with him, I’m going to show him what real victims are.

Congratulations. If you’re on his list, you’re doing something right.

The BTB and commenters’ excoriation of Higgins was comparatively mild. I too am surprised that JMG didn’t show up on the nominations list. Of course, should you be chosen for such an honor, receiving the award will perhaps bring some people over here to take a look and just maybe help them get a little more truthful perspective on the issues involved.

Much as i love what you do Timothy, my vote would go for Frank Kameny Mainly because i di agree that the God these people preach is a sinful homophobic bigot. But then, I make a difference between the Christ we know is true and the anti-Christ they preach.

Don’t you think that any LaBarbera award statuette would have to be a guy in chaps with his cheeks flappin’ in the wind.

“the meanest, most deceitful, most socially destructive and/or most blasphemous “gay” activist of the year.”

I guess that is PP-speak for “the most outspoken, best at exposing frauds or hypocrites, most socially progressive, and/or most personally offensive to Porno Pete, himself (and apparently what he finds personally offensive is love, tolerance, and social justice).” So congratulations to everyone nominated!

But why “Grinch”? That seems to imply a lack of Christmas spirit, to me (ie. How the Grinch Stole Christmas). PP is not very gifted with language (except the crude sexually explicit sort), is he?

Perez Hilton should be # 1 on the list. He’s a sleaze ball who gives people a bad name. While I’m not gay, having very Libertarian views on social issues, it’s stupid for those who say they “want tolerance” themselves are not. The gay movement makes itslef look bad because rather than wanting to be left alone, it’s turned into a Nazi style movement where if you don’t agree you’re a phobe and should be banished to the Russian front as they used to say in the old days.

Tolerance should be on both sides and not just demanded of those without doing the same.

Priya Lynn

December 23rd, 2009

Doc E, if the “gay movement” is a “Nazi style movement”, how come its heterosexuals trying to pass laws denying marrige and equal rights to gays, but gays are not trying to pass laws denying marriage and equal rights to heterosexuals?

Burr

December 23rd, 2009

Perez Hilton is not part of the “gay movement” so connecting the two is stupid. Most of us hate how he reacted, so put away the broad brush.

And as Priya pointed out we haven’t campaigned and legislated AGAINST straight people one iota.

Slouching Towards Kampala: Uganda’s Deadly Embrace of Hate

When we first reported on three American anti-gay activists traveling to Kampala for a three-day conference, we had no idea that it would be the first report of a long string of events leading to a proposal to institute the death penalty for LGBT people. This report will be updated continuously as events continue to unfold. Check here for the latest updates.

Paul Cameron’s World

In 2005, the Southern Poverty Law Center wrote that “[Paul] Cameron’s ‘science’ echoes Nazi Germany.” What the SPLC didn”t know was Cameron doesn’t just “echo” Nazi Germany. He quoted extensively from one of the Final Solution’s architects. This puts his fascination with quarantines, mandatory tattoos, and extermination being a “plausible idea” in a whole new and deeply disturbing light.

In this report, we explore the supposed connection between homosexuality and child sexual abuse, the conclusions reached by the most knowledgeable professionals in the field, and how anti-gay activists continue to ignore their findings. This has tremendous consequences, not just for gay men and women, but more importantly for the safety of all our children.
