A vandalized LGBT center at the University of California at Davis has vowed to keep the graffiti as reminder that as a reminder that intolerance still exists.
The anti-gay vandalism follows other anti-Semitic and racially-motivated hate incidents on campus. A Jewish student found a swastika carved into her dorm room door late last week, and several racially-charged incidents were prompted by an off-campus party that mocked African-Americans with urban stereotypes.
UC Davis officials are planning a town hall meeting in response to the events.

In 2005, the Southern Poverty Law Center wrote that “[Paul] Cameron’s ‘science’ echoes Nazi Germany.” What the SPLC didn”t know was Cameron doesn’t just “echo” Nazi Germany. He quoted extensively from one of the Final Solution’s architects. This puts his fascination with quarantines, mandatory tattoos, and extermination being a “plausible idea” in a whole new and deeply disturbing light.

Anti-gay activists often charge that gay men and women pose a threat to children. While I understand the LGBT’s reasoning for leaving the graffiti in place, I’m not entirely sure it’s such a good idea. After all, the center is there to help LGBT folk. Some of the LGBT folk they’re seeking to help are probably dealing with some pretty intense problems, and being confronted with such reminders of the hatred they face whenever they stop in to seek help could just make matters worse for them.

I agree Jarred. I think its a better idea to as much as possible make such places a respite from hatred, not a reminder of it.

Perhaps they could donate the door to an artist who could use it as part of an instillation on hate and intolerance. Then they can redo the entrance and make it more welcoming.

So, after reading about the incident on the LGBT Community Center at UCDavis, it appears the university center is considering keeping the door “for a while,” not forever, nor for a while, but merely after they had enough time to educate the larger community about the impact of hatred.

Finally, the referenced CBS weblink within this Box Turtle article was written before the actual community meeting took place (as was the statement from the community center I posted above), so I am unsure whether there was a definitive time limit placed on the definition of “a while.”

Actually as of the posting of this blog post the graffiti has already been taken down. Last night there was a community forum held by the Chancellor because this is not the first incident of descrimination on campus. After the meeting facilities went through and cleaned up the center. So it was left up for a few days to prove a point and then removed.

Does Maggie Gallagher or all the pro Prop. 8 witnesses who say they’ve been threatened and that there is an ‘avalanche of hatred’ against them have as much evidence as WE do of who threatens who, where, when…and for how long?
Pictures with context are enduring enough evidence that such a thing exists and has for a long, LONG time.
When Maggie and Co can name at any time when gay people, en masse worked to involuntarily DIVORCE her from HER spouse and any other straight couple, not even THEN would she come close to knowing the experience she’s hijacking.
She’d never admit just how fortunate she is, because we know her cynicism better than we’d get credit for.

How many incidents have there been of gay youth gangs roaming the streets of gay enclaves seeking out breeders and beating them up, then having the local police dismiss the crime?
How many incidents are there of fundamentalist churches being broken into and/or vandalized?
How many incidences have there been of TLBG supervisors and business owners discriminating against straight employees?
How many incidences have there been of TLBG athletes ganging up on the popular kids and beating them up?
I can go on and on with this ad infinitum…

Chuck — where does it say gay people did it?
That’s right: it doesn’t. Not even the ever unreliable CBN said that. Given that straight supporters of ‘No on 8’ outnumber the gay supporters about 10 to 1… why couldn’t a pissed-off straight person have done it?
And what do you consider to be “many gays”? A couple of isolated acts of vandalism doesn’t even come close.
Somewhat ironically, one of your references also contains the lie from the LDS church that “they weren’t involved” in the anti-gay campaign. Now, of course, we all know that they were in fact deeply but secretly involved.
Is lying what you’d consider to be in a “spirit of mutual respect and civility”?
Come to think of it — given the LDS Church is a proven liar on this whole matter, who is to say that they didn’t vandalise their own church?
[Apart from that, I’d be more than content to see anyone charged with a hate crime if that is in fact what they have done. Religion is already protected. Hypocritically.]
