Another Republican Activist Judge

Timothy Kincaid

July 8th, 2010

One of the election cries of conservatives is “Protect our courts, elect Republicans who won’t appoint activist judges.”

Judge Joseph Tauro, who just found DOMA unconstitutional, was the chief legal counsel to Republican Massachusetts Governor John Volpe until he was nominated for Federal Judge by President Richard Nixon.

It kinda takes the wind out of the “liberal activist judge” claim, doesn’t it.

By today’s Republican standards, Richard Nixon would be considered an extreme liberal.

Don’t you know that we used our secret hidden homosexual hidden agenda powers on him to get this unconstitutional law reversed. It kinda surprises me that it took 14 years to reverse it. Didn’t it only take 4 years to reverse the prohibition of alcohol?

John beat me to it. The republican party has moved so far to the right…well…they’re on best buddy terms again with the John Birch Society so…really that says it all. Eisenhower would loose in the primaries to Palin, based on Palin’s superior grasp of America’s defense needs…being able to see Russia from her doorstep and all…

VapoRob: I know you’re being mostly tongue-in-cheek, but:

Repeal of Prohibition actually took 14 years.

For the first 8 years of DOMA’s existence, nobody had the standing to challenge it (since no state allowed same-sex marriages until 2004).

timothy,

my computer wont open up the email links in “Contact Us,” so I’m writing here.

are you aware of the Challenge Issued over at the Friendly Atheist’s blog?

He & Dan Savage took note/issue with Andrew Marin Foundation’s “I’m Sorry Campaign.” This campaign consisted of Christians showing up at the Chicago Pride march with signs and shirts that apologized for the treatment of GLBTs by The Church.

Blogger, the Friendly Atheist says apologies are not enough. He is calling on Christians who say they’re supportive of gay marriage to do so, publicaly, on their blog/facebook.

Very intersting that change from within the church culture may be influenced in a positive manner from the atheist community.

Slouching Towards Kampala: Uganda’s Deadly Embrace of Hate

When we first reported on three American anti-gay activists traveling to Kampala for a three-day conference, we had no idea that it would be the first report of a long string of events leading to a proposal to institute the death penalty for LGBT people. But that is exactly what happened. In this report, we review our collection of more than 500 posts to tell the story of one nation’s embrace of hatred toward gay people. Paul Cameron’s World

In 2005, the Southern Poverty Law Center wrote that “[Paul] Cameron’s ‘science’ echoes Nazi Germany.” What the SPLC didn”t know was Cameron doesn’t just “echo” Nazi Germany. He quoted extensively from one of the Final Solution’s architects. This puts his fascination with quarantines, mandatory tattoos, and extermination being a “plausible idea” in a whole new and deeply disturbing light.

From the Inside: Focus on the Family’s “Love Won Out”

On February 10, I attended an all-day “Love Won Out” ex-gay conference in Phoenix, put on by Focus on the Family and Exodus International. In this series of reports, I talk about what I learned there: the people who go to these conferences, the things that they hear, and what this all means for them, their families and for the rest of us.

Daniel FettyThe FBI’s annual Hate Crime Statistics aren’t as complete as they ought to be, and their report for 2004 was no exception. In fact, their most recent report has quite a few glaring holes. Holes big enough for Daniel Fetty to fall through.
