A slightly comforting thought is that the comittee voted only 6-5 to forward it with one of the Republicans ( a woman) on the panel voting against the ban.

Why does Minnesota need to pass a law? Gay marriage is already banned in that state because Jack Baker, when he was a University of Minnesota law student, took his gay marriage case all the way the U.S. Supreme Court and lost in 1972. The case is still being cited to oppose gay marriage across the country.

May 18, 1970 Michael McConnell and Jack Baker were married by Hennepin County Minnesota Justice of the Peace.

Jack Baker and Frank Kameny were named important to the gay liberation movement on pages 68 and 69 in the article “Homosexuals in revolt: The year that one liberation movement turned militant,” Life Magazine, Dec. 31, 1971, pp. 62-72.
