While the Ugandan Parliament is renewing its efforts to legislate LGBT people out of existence, we learn that Members of Parliament have received a car allowance of 103 million Uganda Shillings (US$44,556) in a deal which, Daily Monitor reports, was supposed to be kept hush-hush because of the hard economic times.  One MP threatened to prevent Parliament from re-opening today if he was not promptly paid. Parliament re-opened today. Take from that what you will.

There are 386 Members of Parliament, times $44,556. That’s US$17,198,616 for a fleet of new Hummers and SUVs in a country where the per capita income is US$523.

$44,556 is also twice what *I* make in a year, and I live in America and have everything I need.

I know and work with people from Africa and based on what I have learned over the years from them is that what they make here would make them damn near wealthy in their own countries. In point of fact, of these several people that I know, a couple of them *Do* send money home to support their families, because without that they might not have enough food to eat.

I’d say nonwithstanding the anti-gay bill (which is a very bad thing, don’t get me wrong!) almost 45 grand for a car allowance for members of parliament shows that their priorities are very messed up!
