Confirmed bachelor, Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Illinois) has weighed in on the brouhaha resulting from Illinois GOP State Chairman’s support for marriage equality. (WBEZ)

“Senator Kirk has full confidence in Pat Brady’s leadership as chairman of the Illinois Republican Party and looks forward to working with him to elect Republicans in 2014,” Lance Trover, a Kirk spokesman, said in a statement.

What does his current marital status (he’s divorced) have to do with his stance?

Timothy – It might be worthwhile putting into the BTB file on Kirk (maybe by updating your June 2010 post) that he, as a newly-elected Senator, was one of the 8 Republicans who voted for repeal of DADT. That was not a hugely courageous vote since he had then just been elected to a 6-year-plus stint in the Senate. But I am hopeful that in the years ahead his political courage will match the personal courage and determination he has demonstatred in returning to the Senate after his debilitating stroke

Tristram,

Thank you for adding that. I hope and expect that Kirk will continue to be more of an ally over time. This support for Pat Brady is not the same as support for marriage equality, but it is support for inclusive Republicans like Brady to take that step.
