Lawmakers cheered as House of Commons Speaker John Bercow said royal assent had been given — one day after the bill to legalize same-sex marriage in England and Wales cleared Parliament. The queen’s approval was a formality and is the last step necessary for a bill to become law.

Marriages are expected to begin sometime in the summer of 2014.

Matt NYC: Oooh, MIAOUWW! Yes, us Brits take ages to get our act together. I suppose when you pass a major law like this lots of other little amendments will have to go through. And you want to get them just right – I can imagine how the yellow press would jump on any error involving marriage forms or licences. So let’s take all the time needed to get it just right. As I recall, the Civil Partnership Act was passed in 2004 and only came into force a year later. There too, there were lots of little changes to implement before the Act came into force.

Well, Sam, even though it’ll take you a year to cross all of the i’s and dot all of the t’s you will still have beaten the likes of Alabama, Mississippi and Georgia by way more than a royal mile.

Cheers!

The shambles of pensions inequality is partly responsible for the delay in implementation.

It’s great news even so. Thanks to the BTB team’s thoughtful articles providing a good example of how to articulate inequality by the way.
