Kirchick’s Stand on Russian Television

RT (Russia Today), a Kremlin-funded television “news” channel designed to sell Russia to the rest of the world, invited Jamie Kirchick to speak about the Bradley Manning sentencing. But noting that RT has already been talking non-stop about Bradley Maning for the 24 hours, Kirchick said it was time to change the subject for two minutes: “I’m not really interested in talking about Bradley Manning. I’m interested in talking about the horrific environment of homophobia in Russia right now.”

Kirchick spoke to RT from a studio in Stockholm. The drama continued even after the camera switched off:

He has since said the taxi driver in the car he was in on his way to the airport in Sweden when the taxi driver received a phone call instructing him to drop Kirchick off at the side of the road.

“So about halfway down the highway on the way to the airport, my driver gets a phone call from his boss saying that the car ride has been cancelled and that he’ll have to drop me off on the side of the road,” he said.

“And I told him that I would pick up the tab. But at the end, actually, at the airport, he said that the ride was free, so maybe we have some anti-Putin activists in the Swedish taxi company.”

OMG, that vid kicks ass. With the Russian News Anchor also coming out in Russia at the center of the controversy, the backlash is amazing.

Seems Putin is raising awareness to the children in Russia exponentially rather than his goal to hide it. Maybe at the end of the day, his move will be to our favor when the Russian people develop a heart for the pain inflicted on gay people. It may have taken an ice pick like this to get the ice block melting quicker. Could it be Putin had this planned all along for a positive result for gays? Hmmmm ……. yeh stretching, I know.

Tim&orJim,

I have a smart phone and when I try to publish a comment, your site says “error posting your comment, your message may be too short” and it won’t complete, which means I can only comment from my desk top. Your sight is the only site that does this when using my phone’s Internet, though it didn’t do it a month ago. Are you getting any other comments about this? Thought you’d like to know. As always, love your site and the things you post.

I had the same problem. I hope a new version of the mobile plugin addresses the problem. I really don’t know how to fix it otherwise.

Be careful saying anything bad about RT. For some reason, liberals seem to love it and just ignore that it’s the Russian government’s mouthpiece.

RT is very biased and at the same time they nail the head on many issues that American media ignores. They have A HUGE black eye with their anti-gay reporting on the “propaganda” law. After seeing the propaganda “news” from RT, I now listen more carefully to their news coverage to make sure I am not mislead. At the same time, I don’t want to throw the baby out with the bath water. They are one of the only sources that rallies against global warming and the hypocrisy of big money.

I don’t think it is the “liberals” that are in love with all things Russian these days. Do you even read this site?

iDavid,

Perhaps it happened when many conservatives took the view that gay people are pedophiles, climate change doesn’t exist, and racism is dead in america.

Slouching Towards Kampala: Uganda’s Deadly Embrace of Hate

When we first reported on three American anti-gay activists traveling to Kampala for a three-day conference, we had no idea that it would be the first report of a long string of events leading to a proposal to institute the death penalty for LGBT people. Paul Cameron’s World

In 2005, the Southern Poverty Law Center wrote that “[Paul] Cameron’s ‘science’ echoes Nazi Germany.” What the SPLC didn”t know was Cameron doesn’t just “echo” Nazi Germany. He quoted extensively from one of the Final Solution’s architects. This puts his fascination with quarantines, mandatory tattoos, and extermination being a “plausible idea” in a whole new and deeply disturbing light.
