McCain criticizes Putin

Today Sen John McCain took advantage of the offer to write a letter in Pravda to the Russian people in response to Putin’s LA Times opinion piece. He was harshly critical of the Russian leadership accusing Putin and his administration of corruption and oppression. He had examples: (Pravda)

They write laws to codify bigotry against people whose sexual orientation they condemn. They throw the members of a punk rock band in jail for the crime of being provocative and vulgar and for having the audacity to protest Putin’s rule.

You missed the most important part of this story: McCain submitted the article to a publication called, which he assumed to be the same publication as the Soviet-era publication, Pravda, that was the propaganda arm of the party, but which is in fact “a sensationalistic online-only news site few people in Russia take seriously” according to, basically “the Russian equivalent of the Daily Blaze”. He humiliated himself and made himself look utterly clueless about the current state of Russian affairs, and ended up making Putin look better rather than showing him up. Check the story:

As a vehement supporter of AZ’s anti-marriage in its constitution, McCain certainly knows first-hand of the practice of writing “laws to codify bigotry against people whose sexual orientation [he] condemn[s].”
