The bigot died last night just before midnight.

If there is a God. If (S)He exists, may (S)He show the mercy this guy never showed others. If mercy is not warranted, then may (S)He show his judgement. I’ll pray for mercy because I am a better person that Phelps was.

Kinda anticlimactic.
Think of all of the poor innocents all over the planet that died of hunger, disease, thirst, war or whatever last night just before midnight.
Fred Phelps death (dying in a hospice of old age and bitterness) is a first world problem.

Alas, we shall miss him – for he gave being anti-gay a bad name — for so horrendous was he that he became the comparison – “are you as wacko on gays as Westboro?” — and so in an ironic, and I’m sure unintentional way, he helped gay folks in this nation in ways few appreciate yet.

Now we await but the next loon to step up to the hot plate and sear into the minds of most — gayness is not the problem.

Jim Hlavac:

I would say that the obvious successor to Phelps – and a more dangerous person at that – is surely Scott Lively.

I agree William. Phelps was a clown who expressed the hate that many religious-rightists feel but would never dare say – like David Duke to the racist-right. As such, he could be rejected as “crazy” by rightists to shield their own hatred.

Lively, on the other hand, is just as hateful and evil as Phelps, except he’s made effective steps to oppress and possibly even inspire the murder of LGBTs in third-world countries. If Phelps was Mussolini… well, I hate to violate godwin’s law.

Slouching Towards Kampala: Uganda’s Deadly Embrace of Hate

When we first reported on three American anti-gay activists traveling to Kampala for a three-day conference, we had no idea that it would be the first report of a long string of events leading to a proposal to institute the death penalty for LGBT people. But that is exactly what happened. In this report, we review our collection of more than 500 posts to tell the story of one nation’s embrace of hatred toward gay people. This report will be updated continuously as events continue to unfold. Check here for the latest updates.

Paul Cameron’s World

In 2005, the Southern Poverty Law Center wrote that “[Paul] Cameron’s ‘science’ echoes Nazi Germany.” What the SPLC didn”t know was Cameron doesn’t just “echo” Nazi Germany. He quoted extensively from one of the Final Solution’s architects. This puts his fascination with quarantines, mandatory tattoos, and extermination being a “plausible idea” in a whole new and deeply disturbing light.

On February 10, I attended an all-day “Love Won Out” ex-gay conference in Phoenix, put on by Focus on the Family and Exodus International. In this series of reports, I talk about what I learned there: the people who go to these conferences, the things that they hear, and what this all means for them, their families and for the rest of us.
